Do you go out chrismas shopping on black Friday?

Asked by rossi_bear (753points) November 24th, 2008

I was never one to go and get up at wee hours of the morning to stand in lines. i always gave the money to my mom if she was going.

Only for myself. Sometimes I’ll go out and grab one or two things, but I never go for the insane deals. It’s, like, the $2 poinsettas or the $20 jeans at Old Navy. I go after work (I have a half day on BF) and if whatever is sold out, I shrug and go home.

I try to make it a rule not to put my purchase hopes for a gift on Black Friday because my chances of snagging one of the real “deals” is about zero.

I never understood how anyone can wake up that early with that much turkey in their stomachs. At least I can’t imagine myself waking up at 3am when i have several pounds of delicious dark meat and stuffing inside of me.

I like to!!! I even go out in the wee hours but just to watch people. I find it facinating! Inevitablely people are all stressed and crazy and I love to just sit or stroll around with a cup of coffee and just enjoy being the only person who just doesn’t care! It’s a trip!!!

I have many years, this year however I looked at the ads online, and there’s nothing I would buy even at those prices. But after last years’ experience (standing in bitter cold to face unmanagable crowds, only to have everything you want sold out), I had kind of soured on it anyway. It was something I had done from the time I was very little up until last year…I lived in a smaller town where you could actually navigate and the things you wanted to buy were usually abundant. Now it’s become, OK, let’s put a PS3 for sale at half price and people start camping out at 10pm the night before, and get into fistfights when the doors open and they find out the whole store only has 2 of them, so even though they’re 3rd in line, they’ve wasted 8 hours of their lives for nothing.

I think the best bet is to look at the things that don’t have the highly limited quantities, then get out at an early but reasonable hour after the initial throng is gone and it’s just crazy busy and not batshit crazy busy.

We don’t have Black Friday in Canada but we do have Christmas sales, and boxing day is usually when people line up for deals. If I am needing to buy an item, I may wait and tackle the crowd, but usually I won’t bother because there’s nothing I need.

@rossi- My mom got into a fight with a woman over a cabbage patch doll when they first came out. I usually do my shopping in a day and try to avoid the mall. Whenever I think about black Friday I picture 20$ DVD players that will break in a month.

rossi_bear's avatar

Intresting everyone. i always wondered if it was really worth doing. ya i hear ya jessturtle. i got one for christmas too( the dvd player) and that is about how long it lasted too. and ya i remember the fighting over the dolls. that is pretty bad when they do that to a item like that.lol

The fact that it is called “Black” Friday makes me cringe.

No thanks.

EmpressPixie's avatar

It is called Black Friday for several reasons, my favorite being that it is the day that many stores go from operating in the red, to operating in the black—at a profit.

justin5824's avatar

What is “Black friday”? No really?

rossi_bear's avatar

It is when they have all the sales after turkey day. and people get up real early and go shopping for the bargins. some go crazy and fight over the stuff.

cdwccrn's avatar

Never. The best thing to do on black Friday is stay home by the fire and relax.

augustlan's avatar

@ccdwccrn: Don’t forget: and eat leftovers!

It’s bad enough that there a few stores open on Thanksgiving Day. I don’t shop Black Friday unless I absolutely have to and then it’s not till later in the day.

rossi_bear's avatar

@raggedy ann.. you are smart to do that. good idea.

i do plan to..i went last year. i need to save wherever and whenever i can. i like people, crowds not so much. sales, always !

rossi_bear's avatar

you are brave nissa! LOL!! i can totally understand what you mean about saving every penny you can! i wonder if you can go online and do the sale the same way some how?

jessicajane's avatar

I usually go – but only to small crafty/gift stores. Its a big tradition with my family. I don’t remember ever going to a mall or department store for black friday.

rossi_bear's avatar

that is a good idea jessicajane! i never thought about going to a craft store to get the things for homemade gifts! i can do that! i always give homemade gifts to my family. that is such a good idea. thank you!

@rossi bear, I’m glad I could help :)

Yet another (very sad) reason to stay home.
