Why do cats sleep so much?

Asked by Trance24 (3311points) November 25th, 2008

I mean honestly everytime I look at my cat he is sleeping. The same goes for any other cat I see. Even in the wild felines are sleeping. Just look at those lions, just sleeping away.

Lucky. My sister’s cat barely sleeps and when it does I’m not around. It’s like its out to get me or something. That’s why I want to name her Satan. It fits.

I forget what the percentage is, but cats sleep most of their life away! The wake up at night, to annoy us!! :)

Because they can : )

Because they have us to look after them, feed them, and clean out there litter boxes. They are tired from laughing at us all day.

I also want to know….I heard somewhere that cats spend their 75% of life in sleeping….

I have one that spends all of her free time watching me. It’s unnerving. She follows me everywhere, sits on my shoulder, and watches what I type on the computer.

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would be alarmed.

-They like to dream
-They party like it’s 1999 in the night
-They are plotting our demise…which reminds me of this video

I love my kitty…

It is their nature and metabolism… they also need high fat diets, but can burn it off lounging around!! It’s unfair! Not only do we feed them and clean their mess, but we also give them regular massages, just because they’re soft and fluffy and make a soothing sound when contented.

That’s why I’ve always wanted to be a kitty in my next life. Some teach that the cow is the highest life form, but I think it’s the feline.

True that, hearkat!

Cats sleep approximately 16 hrs/day. They do it in short bursts, instead of one long stretch. They seem to do everything in bursts. Big cats in the wild don’t continuously pursue animals or scavenge for carrion. They find one big meal, and take it down at a sprint. Cats must just be animals of extremes. Felis catus still has the mentality of its larger cousins. Your cat just sleeps so much, so that it can take down an antelope when it gets the chance.

Depending on the cat and the time of year, a healthy cat will sleep from 13 hours per day up to 20. This is the greatest amount of sleep of any mammal. They have both REM sleep (and presumably dreaming sleep) and non-REM sleep, just as people and dogs do. It is believed that cats sleep this much in order to conserve energy because their prey may be few and far between and because they expend a great deal of energy when they hunt.

Although most folks think cats are nocturnal, they actually are crepuscular – their peak activity is at twilight and at dawn, times when their potential prey is less wary. Cats are actually desert animals so these two times are the coolest periods during the day when prey are active.

cats sleep because they have nothing else to do. no worries or anxiety of the future unlike we humans do. i mean, if i had nothing to worry about i would do the same thing. i would sleep all day long! lol…

Darwin is saying true, they are most active at these times, and depending on whether they get to go outside too, If they are allowed outside, they will be more active, and it will be healthier for them. But, letting cats out can be tricky, they should be fixed, so that they have less tendency to want to stray, and they should be supervised for a while while learing their boundaries.
They can also come to be quite bored and fat if they have no stimulation like play time for exercise. I keep my cats busy in the house too, they have plenty of toys, but they for the most part love feather toys most of all. It is natural for them to want to sleep a lot of the time though. Hope this helps.
