I use St. Ives ground beef crumble and mix up the burgers the same way I do with ground beef—breadcrumbs, egg, barbecue sauce, green pepper, onions. When I grill them, I use one of those grill pans for fish, and don’t cook them for as long as I would a regular hamburger. Even the non-vegetarians like these.
I’ve seen recipes that include sauteed onions & mushrooms, cooked oats, barley, & lentils, and a mix of herbs & spices.
I’ll have to keep an eye on this topic… if it’s easier to just buy the ingredients (and have those ingredients on-hand for other recipes) over buying the pre-made, that’s such a total win-win for me!!
First slaughter a veggie…
Another option that’s quick and easy is to marinate and grill (or sauté) the cap from a portabella mushroom. (Take the stem completely off.) These have a nice flavor that goes well with some marinades usually used for meat, and a chewy texture. No one would be fooled into thinking it’s a burger, but on a bun with some A-1 sauce, you could do much worse.
I still haven’t found a recipe I’m happy with. I do like the tofu burger mix my mom sends me from Hawaii. Just add the tofu, make patties, and cook.
