I suddenly need RSS to get the latest announcements from an arts website. I think this is a pretty simple task, just new to me.

An RSS Feed is like the channel of info from a website. You need an RSS reader or ‘aggregator’ to collect these feeds in a readable news format.
If you mean an RSS Reader, that you use to read RSS feeds (like one from your arts website), I would recommend Google Reader as you can access it not just on your own mac but anywhere you can sign into google.
Hope that helps.
NetNewsWire is an outstanding RSS aggregator, and it is now free. Very simple, but easily customizable. Integrates with the Mac very well. It will automatically send podcasts to iTunes. Free sync with the NewsGaotr site and you can have access to your feeds from any Web browser.

I use Google Reader actually, but there is a lot of great RSS readers out there. NetNewsWire, Headlines, NewsFireX. try them and see what fits you best.
Googlereader works well
Currently i’m using a program called Endo. I think it works pretty well though.
Googlereader is great, but you can also do RSS in Firefox and Thunderbird. I actually like Thunderbird’s interface and the fact that it links out to the web well. I RSS NPR’s programming and I can get multimedia content right in Thunderbird.
