I know they can hiccup, but would a baby ever cry in utero?

I’m curious why this is a question for me.

I don’t think so. I saw a documentary once where the baby was seemingly laughing.

EDIT: Googling does point towards maybe.

I ‘m curious as to what brought this question to mind since a hiccup is a physical response and crying is generally an emotional one.

In the womb, no one can hear you cry.

@tinyfaery – Same here…

Don’t you need air in your lungs to cry? That seems like something that doesn’t happen until after birth.

The question came up because my sister is pregnant, and her cat keeps standing on her belly. It’s not an abortion debate question. She due in December, I say the cat is jealous already, but then we were talking about how the baby would express that the cat was hurting him.

I’m sure the cat has always walked on her belly.

Stay with me here.

During her last pregnancy, my sister was lying in bed one night and her baby had a bad case of the hiccups (they were so bad they were keeping my sister awake). My sister then proceeded to rip an outrageously loud fart (which she is prone to do), and she felt the baby jerk in startlement and the hiccups disappeared. If you can startle or frighten a baby in utero, shouldn’t they be able to cry (at least in mime)?
