I am looking for software which I can use to create icons for applications and I was wondering what everyone used and if there were any good free applications? (By icon creation I meant Adobe Illustrator and so on)

Apple, or Windows?
For all my Mac icons, I just use Photoshop. For windows, I think you can now save .png as .ico and use those with Vista, but I am not sure.
Adobe Illustrator is so perfect for icon design. I wouldn’t use anything else.
(Windows)
I’ve used IconEdit Pro for a long time. Microangelo is another icon-specific application. Microsoft Paint also allows files to be saved as .ICO, but there are transparency problems doing it that way.
I have XP and I use Axialis. Works great.
Adding to the original discussion…. I have a mac and can’t afford Illustrator at the moment :S
People pay for Adobe products?
@steveprutz:
I thought Paint could, I know in the past it did (Win95) but I wasn’t sure, so I didn’t say anything, thus saving myself from complete idiocy.
@woolycow:
If you goto the Apple Software site, look for a program called MAcPaint (I think that is it. Anyway, it has the two words in the name in some order.) That is the Mac version of MSPaint. If you safe your work as jpeg or png, you can use them as icons. The advantage with using Illustrator and\or photoshop is how fast you can make a “glossy” icon, like the ones on the iPhone. With MSPaint you need a lot of talent to draw the icons all in one layer, where-as Illustrator lets multiple layers.
@Eambos: LOL, you beat me to the punch line!
I don’t know, I just have my 14 year old daughter make them for me!
Sorry I used Ubantu Window.This is pure Linux Base and there are used .rmp file.
