I like a lot of UK shows besides Python and old and new Doctor Who: Father Ted, The League of Gentlemen, MI5, Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister, The Goodies. Viva Blackpool is great (you Tennant fans need to find that – he sings!).
I like Wayne and Shuster, the original SCTV, You Can’t Do That on Television, Kids in the Hall and Corner Gas from Canada.
I know of Kath and Kim and Neighbours, but I haven’t seen those, or really, any Aussie shows, though there was the sketch show with Eric Bana as a troupe member. I only saw one episode. He was funny in that.
There was one Japanese show I liked that I used to watch when I came to NYC. I don’t know what it was called, but I watched every Saturday morning without fail. It was set in the 16th or 17th century, and there was this wandering shogun who’d come into a town right when bad things were going on. He’d see the bad activities and stick around to investigate, but if anyone asked, “Who are you?” he was all “I’m just a guy who needs a job for a while” and once he got an idea who the bad guys were, he’d show up at their house. The bad guys would always say, “Right, like I’m going to stop being a d&$^ because you say so. Who the hell are you?” and then the shogun would take off his poor man robe and the bad guy would at first be afraid (“OH! It’s the SHOGUN!”) but then he’d be like, “Hey, you know what, f%#@ you anyway!” and send out his fighters. Then two teens, boy and girl, would pop out from seemingly nowhere and fight with the shogun and the bad guy would be defeated. The town was all “YAY!” but the shogun would move on. Because that’s the kind of shogun he was. Like a Japanese Lone Ranger. Awesome. It went off the air maybe 10 years ago, but I miss it.
