Is there a cool free alternative for MobileMe?

Asked by sethmedia (80points) December 3rd, 2008

Playing around with some webstorage and sharing stuff and just wondering if there is something out there like MobileMe but with out the heavy $100 you have to drop

If all you’re interested in is free online storage, check out gDisk. You can sync your calendars to Google Calendar with Calaboration. You’re not going to find anything that has seamless integration with OSX applications like iPhoto, but there are alternatives to each solution that MobileMe offers, and they likely all involve Google.

Dropbox dropbox dropbox. It’s great and has seamless integration with os x. You can only back up 2 gigs of information unless you want to pay but that should be good enough for personal documents and photos.

(Also, using gdisk is against Google’s rules. I can’t afford to get locked out of my email so I haven’t tried it.)

Lifehacker.com frequently has articles based on this premise (including replacing MobileMe). I’m on the iPhone, so you’ll have to search the site yourself.

Mix Google Mail and Google Calendar and toss in Dropbox and you have a free MobileMe. It can all be setup to sync with your Mac and iPhone as well.

I use box.net to keep all my documents and pictures

You can buy MobileMe subscriptions on eBay for around $40. While I don’t think it’s worth $100 for most people, it’s totally worth $40 for almost everyone (except über geeks)

Here is an article that tries to answer that question: http://theappleblog.com/2008/11/12/break-away-from-mobileme-seven-services-to-help-you-make-the-move/

No once service does all that MobileMe does, so at this point it can only be replaced by individual free or inexpensive services.
