Would laying in bed for 8 hours straight but not falling asleep do the same as sleeping 8 hours?
If I just lay there not using any energy, would my body recharge the same as it would if I were sleeping?

The same? No. But better than being up and about. Your brain won’t cycle through all of its (sleep) phases while you are awake.
As I recall, you go through multiple sleep cycles each night….each one lasting about 90 minutes.

it may seem like you never fell asleep, but at times you do go into light sleep mode. you can still smell and hear, but some of the other senses switch off.
I do believe that should one go without REM sleep long enough, one could die. I’m also pretty sure that before that, there would be some brain damage involved. Am I wrong? I probably just watch too much House.
@poofandmook – I think you are on the right track I heard that without sleep your organs would begin to fail, which I guess your brain would fail to ha causing brain damage? Either way you need your sleep!
Also as for just laying in bed, doesnt cut it…you need be fully asleep to be energized and healthy…just how it is, but wouldnt it be nice to have those extra hours to get things done around the house? ha

Well I slept four hours last night so I’m really tired right now and I got my laptop and laid in bed and I was like ‘I wonder if just laying here messing around on my computer for a few hours would count as a nap and make my body feel less tired?’
Lack of REM sleep messes with the mind first, leading eventually to psychosis. We see it in the ICU.
Get the patients out of the ICU
into a quiet room, let them get a good night sleep and it clears right up.
People who don’ t have CPAP machines and therefore don’t sleep well, with many episodes of apnea( breathing stops temporarily), also have mentation difficulties.
Bottom line- we all need a good night sleep.

I ain’t no expert. But I find there is a total difference between messing around on my iPhone and just laying down doing nothin. Just laying there has to be more rejuvenating. But like I said, I ain’t no expert.
NO. I think that any person would get more tired lying and rolling t on the bed and not sleeping. I would prefer to get up and do something until i feel bored and lazy then go to bed.

Your body might feel ok (i would not go as far as saying rejuvinated) but your mind cannot function without sleep. like what cdwccrn was saying. it messes with your mind.
you need the sleep for your subconscious to sort through all the things that your brain interpreted while you were awake.
The other night I did not sleep at all. It is a feature of depression that it affects sleep habits and that particular night I sat up in front of the TV, reading, doing sudoku puzzles and occasionally dozing. At 4.30 am there was no point in going to bed. Of course, I was wiped out for the rest of the day. You absolutely need your sleep.
