I erect the Christmas tree as often as possible
har har har, queenz…
For me, it’s Dec. 24th.
As for the lights, depends on my mood
@la chica, why the 24th? Seems a little late. Is there a cultural reason, kind of like an old wives tale? Like putting a pineapple on the tree. I’ve heard that means something. Does anyone know what the pineapple means?
I’m a little put off by your lack of open-mindedness, steve. Is there a “cultural reason” or “old wives’ tale” that tells you to put yours up at a different time?
No, I don’t know when to put it up. That’s why I was asking your reason. Like the pineapple, someone else told me the 24th but I don’t remember why. I was hoping you knew.
Okay, I can understand that. It might seem late to you, but it doesn’t to me. It seems like exactly the right time, which is why I do it then. It’s called a “Christmas Tree” not a “December Tree” or a “All of December and half of November and January too Tree”. I wouldn’t argue with someone who wants to leave theirs up that long, that’s their perogative. It’s just not how we do things in my house.
When do you take it down?
In the morning on Dec. 26th, unless I’m feeling super lazy, then maybe the 27th.
Thank you for the advice.
I wasn’t really trying to give advice; I was just saying how I do things, not trying to set an example or anything…
We usually put ours up about 2 weeks before Christmas. I prefer all white lights, but have done colored occasionally. I don’t mind those softly ‘twinkling’ white lights, but hate blinking lights – especially blinking colored lights. Too much visual stimulation for my little head!
Soon after thanksgiving, down a few days after Christmas. No blinking lights. Colored on one tree/ white on the other.
Never heard the pineapple thing.
Mine’s up already.
Have to stave off that recession, you know.
I put my up ASAP… it’s so so so perdy :)
and @augustian: agree on the white lights, for sure. I liked colored lights when I was younger, but now I realize how much better it looks in white.
@augustlan—Why am I not surprised by your answer? Oh! Right! Because it’s similar to mine! hahaha
I’m still in my parents’ house right now, and Christmas is My Mother’s Holiday. So she puts up the tree right after Thanksgiving and she gets to do her big, gaudy thing with multi-colored blinking lights and tons of colored ornaments all over and garlands and tinsel. Eugh. I don’t spend a lot of time in the living room in December. Like augustlan said, it’s too much visual stimulation for me.
When I’m on my own, I’ll put up a little tree a week or two before Christmas. It’ll have white lights that don’t blink. If I can find white chasers that go slowly, I might possibly consider that. And all the ornaments will be white, blue and silver.
I have a teeny little tree I use from year to year. Honestly, I’d love to keep it up ALL year round and have presents under it from time to time! I haven’t put mine up yet but I wanted to last weekend… here’s hoping this weekend is it!
Up right now! and a merry yule to all!
