Cheap and romantic restuarants in NYC?

Asked by jackson3 (5points) December 5th, 2008

Looking for an affordable date-place in NYC (nothing corny or touristy). By affordable I mean in the $20—$30/person range. Good atmosphere and romantic vibes. Any suggestions?

It can be pretty romantic at the Yaffa Cafe. It’s on 97 St. Marks Pl.

Maybe somewhat above your range is Prune, which I like (and know the chef owing to a long and super crazy story). My wife and I used to love going to Il Gatto & La Volpe on the Upper East Side when we lived there. Make sure to get the steamed artichoke and the fresh (homemade) pasta.

OMG, there’s a little italian place on a side road, I’ll remember it in a few, it’s THE best. The portions are so big that you can just get one thing and share :]

All the other ones I know are funner (yes funner) places like Jekyll and Hydes on 6th, or 7th if youre in the village.

I like Lasagna on the east side, 941 2nd Ave. (Corner of 50th St.) or if your into Japanese cuisine there is Amber restaurant on the UES 1406 3rd Avenue (between 79th St & 80th St)

I haven’t lived in New York for 16 years but when I was dating (in the dark ages) there were a series of little French restaurants in the high West 40’s, say West 48th and 49th that were reasonable and very conducive to first dates or for late suppers after a show.

Names that come to mind are Du MIdi and Pierre au Tunnel. There was another one whose name escapes me.

Perhaps a current Manhattan resident could chime in here and tell us if these places still exist or if I am just wasting everyone’s time reminiscing.
