I know that they used to be popular in the early part of the 1900’s because it was thought that they cured all kinds of ailments. Now there are some people that are “fetishists” but otherwise, they are not used for anything that i know of except the barium enema used for cancer detection.
i had one when i was about 6 and i didn’t go to the bathroom for like 5 days.

Yes, they are for constipation.
It used to be part of the pre-delivery procedure. along with shaving pubic hair. I believe that child-bearing is more civilized now.
I have had to use several Fleets before the two horrid colonoscopy.
Ugh, I had a colonoscopy a couple months ago and they didn’t give me an enema but that gallon of yuck to drink.
Maybe the protocol (let us pray) has changed since 2004. I am due again in 2010. Ugh.
enema’s are ussually given before flexible sigmoidoscopies and other limited investigations of the bowel (ie when the aim is not examine the entire bowel).
They are also used to treat constipation, hepatic encephalpathy and to treat ulcerative colitis for example.
@gail if they give you polyethyl glycol for your next cololoscopy you’ll be wishing for the enemas back. It’s like drinking 4 liters of soapy water. Makes you very nauseaus on top of cleaning your bowel out. Most people find they can’t complete the whole regime.
@gail: just think, now the younguns are shaving and giving themselves enemas for fun!
Dave; You are joking, I presume?
I had a colonic. It was amazing, and I lost 10 lbs in 2 hours. A colonic is an emema on steroids—have one, it is amazing!
Taking an emema on steroids, by choice? No gun to one’s head? 10 lbs in 2 hrs.? That sounds good for the intestional flora.
I had an enema on one occasion and I hope that I never, ever have to have one again.
The last time I had one was when I was in early labor in 1984. it is ~so much fun to do when you are having contractions!~
I had a colonoscopy last year and I had to drink that yucky stuff that jessturtle23 spoke of. It’s beter, but not much.
@gail—Klismaphilia. You learn something you don’t want to know every day.
@MacBean; I don’t have the words to express my gratitude.
Yes, before the of my firstborn delivery. With contractions, I had other things on my mind.
Yes, including one of cheap jug white zinfandel.
