Are the majority of the best apps on Apple.com?

Asked by queenzboulevard (2553points) December 7th, 2008

In the downloads section of the Apple website, there are tons of apps. Are there any cool apps you won’t find there? Or are the apps on the Apple website no good at all? What’s your opinion about them?

Apple is just promoting any software that it thinks might be of interest – there’s isn’t a strong quality assessment when they make the picks. Think of it as a phone book – there’s lots of great companies in there but also crappy ones which is why I don’t really like using it.

I work as a Mac IT consultant sometimes and I’ve found the best way to get started is to Google “best Mac type of software”. Say I want to find a good FTP client, I’d Google best Mac FTP client and you get Transmit, Fetch, and Cyberduck in the first four listings which I’d say are pretty much the best 3 FTP apps for the Mac right now.

You can try other variations i.e. “cool Mac software”, etc.

I like Macupdate over VersionTracker ‘cause it has direct download links (VT makes you click through their info page).

I use google reader and find things that I am interested in, group them together and read all the feeds daily. There have been some great posts on places like LifeHacker and TechCrunch.

I suggest that you find sites that you like and subscribe to their RSS feeds. Not only will it give you interesting information but, if they are anything like the sites I read, it will give you some great software suggestions.
