My family has spent a fair amount of time in Antigua, in the British West Indies. A beautiful island with plenty to do and a lot of options for different budgets.
There is a small island off of the coast of Mexica near Cancun called Isla Mujeres – one of the legends says that the pirates used to stash their women there, hence “island of women”. It is so small there are few cars, mostly mopeds and bikes. The town is very quaint, authentic – not at all like Cancun. The island is a great stepping off point for diving, snorkling, fishing, kayaking and wildlife preserves. It’s also easy to take the ferry to Cancun and catch buses to a variety of Mayan ruins -(sorry, I’m going to butcher the spelling) Chichinitza and Telum I can highly recommend. For the adventerous types it also has a topless beach. Nothing like having margaritas made with fresh juice during happy hour and then walking down to the point of the island to watch the sunset.
The city of Oaxaca in Mexico is BEAUTIFUL. The food is amazing and the local art scene is fantastic – rugs, ceramics, carved and painted wooden animals, etc. Also great hiking, mountain biking, waterfalls…
I heard St. Barts and St. Martin in the Caribean is awesome.
Cozamel, Mexico is one.
Syz, that sounds great about the island. Will have to remember that for the future trip. how did you find out about this island?
um, don’t remember now…I’ve been several times. It’s a great laid-back sort of place.
