the new “green’ computer looks good—can that take the place of a non-portable? Is it a good model?

I think you’re thinking of the new Macbooks—Apple refers to them as “the world’s greenest family of notebooks” in this ad.
The Macbook is a good computer. It has a 13” screen, which might be the only drawback. The small screen makes it portable. The 15” version is called the Macbook Pro, and it’s more expensive but slightly faster.
Both of these are very nice machines, and I recommend either of them. They start at $1299. (There is a $999 version of the Macbook, but it’s slower and less green than the $1299 version. And not as good a value, in my opinion.)
These computers could definitely take the place of a desktop. If you have power-intensive activities in mind, you will want the faster one, but they are both fast enough for normal use.
The Apple portables tend to have all the number-crunching power of the mid-range Apple desktops, but without the display capabilities. Unless you’re doing something seriously processor-intensive like real-time video editing, the aluminum MacBook is probably all you need.
Yeah the basic Mac Book is great for just normal use, e-mail, pictures, etc. Don’t waste money on a Pro or a nice desktop unless you do art, animation, as said above video-editing, or anything that you need lots of processing power and storage space for.
I was PC up until August. I went ahead and purchased an iMac and I LOVE IT! I use Dell at work and come home to do real work on my Mac. I wish I had gotten a Macbook for the portability to take it to work when I need it.
