Cold weather clothing, fashion or function?

Asked by SuperMouse (30853points) December 10th, 2008

I am new to the whole idea of bundling up, when I do I usually don’t give much thought to the ensemble, my main goal is to be warm! When you dress for the cold do you think about fashion or is all about the warmth?

Warmth. Here in Canada it’s a necessity if one’s outside for any long period of time. I do see people who choose fashion over warmth, and they’re always shivering and huddling for warmth. It gives me a good laugh.

Warmth. Me and my layers can’t afford to think about fashion.

I am however, in the market for a new winter coat. If any of you see a 3/4 length coat that is Chicago warm and comes in COLORS, let me know! (Seriously, how hard can it be to find something that isn’t navy, black, or depressing brown?)

@EmpressPixie – NY & Co. had some really cute wool-ish coats this season. Do any of these tickle your fancy?

I think about style when I’m choosing which of the warm jackets or warm mittens or warm hats to wear, but warmth is the main goal.

Better to look unfashionable and be warm than to get frostbite because you’re au courant.

Fashion. The styles are so much prettier in the winter. I love wearing skirts in the winter. Something so pretty about a wool skirt with black knee high boots. As long as you wear stockings, it is not any colder than pants.

@jsc: Thanks! I’m seriously considering that purple one! (Oh, I’m sorry “Italian Grape”.) I just have this NEED to add some color to the Chicago winter-scape. Like… everyone is glum and gloomy and dark all winter. A bit of color would not be amiss.

well, i do think about both actually. when i was young and dumb, i’d dress poorly for winter trying to be fashionably acceptable. my mother would say “this ain’t no weather to be trying to be cute!” later on in life, i got the clue, but i still think about “the look.”

i work outside 1 day a week in sometimes 20 to 30-degree weather. i wear those long johns fer sure boy! they make a big difference.

Warm + Dry. I agree with those who have said they think about function and fashion.
For warmth: scarves, beautiful scarves. For dry: boots or sturdy shoes – no wet toes!

If I know it is going to be über cold, I’ll go for warmth over fashion. But if its just going to be cool, I’ll wear my thinner jacket that has (faux) fur around the hood. I get a lot of compliments on that jacket.

Function. My winter jacket is warm, but ugly as sin. The bottom is unraveling, one side has a big white spot from where I spilled paint on it, the elbows are worn out… But it’s warm, and not too heavy, and I’m never worried about getting it messy.

mixture. Doing the horses, we can look ugly…. I got a woolly hat which looks like there is a secret can of bushes beans in it, it kind of goes into a woolly tube on top of my head. Dont go to a bar in it tho.

@jsc3791: I ended up with a super cute bright green jacket. It’s almost leprechaun green. I love it! It’s so cheerful and bright and greeeeeen.

@EmpressPixie: Thanks for the update!

what is clothing fashion

Both! Between Woolrich, Lands End and LL Bean I’m always warm and darn cute, in a I live on a ranch kind of way. Which I do. Just embrace the fact that you will not look svelt and go for luxury instead.

Both! Function is in the first place and fashion is in the second place.
