Do website mods get paid?
From what I gather some mods get paid and some don’t.
Are the Fluther mods volunteers?

I’m on a salary of £250,000 a year.
Generally, no – they volunteer for the love of the game.
@Dave—Don’t you mean the lurve of the game?
:)
Oh yeah, totally tax free. :) No I’m kidding. Fluther only just above breaks even, it’ll be a while before Andrew and Ben can even pay themselves what they deserve. I’m on a gap year, so I don’t mind helping build an awesome community around a great concept.
Also; where did you hear we got paid?
rich – wtf? i am only getting paid 200,000! And that too in dollars. Sexism on Fluther. Spread the word ladies!
Did I mention that mine was in millions? Yeah, that’s right, two hundred and fifty thousand millions.
Now, where o’ where did Andrew and Ben hide the highlight question button? It has to be around here somewhere…
So…the mods do it for lurve! (ba bum pssssh)
@RH
I didn’t hear you guys got paid. I’ve heard that the mods on some of the imageboards I used to frequent got paid.
I’m curious how Fluther can even “just above break even”...I don’t see ANY advertising here. How does a site like this even bring in a single penny of revenue?
@dalepetrie I once saw something on a board (mod help here please??) that Fluther can get revenue for a click through and completed purchase on other sites. Amazon maybe? However where that magic link and click through button is on Fluther, I cannot tell you…..
Ads are served to non-members; the guys that arrive into questions by searching for information on Google or whatever. If you log out and view this question, you’ll see ads at the top of the discussion section.
Fluther also has a commission account at Amazon. So if I suggested an item on Amazon.com in response to something, and you followed the link and then bought it, Amazon knows that you arrived there from Fluther.
Fluther receives a small percentage of the profit from the sale. It doesn’t cost you anymore though; it’s just Amazon saying thanks to Fluther for referring you to them.
The third revenue stream is from the Fluther shirts sold at Insanely Great tees. Buy yours today!
The final revenue stream is from selling the organs of people that have over-Fluthered and slipped into a coma. Felt sleepy yesterday? Missing a kidney? Now you know why.
I don’t think there’s anything else, but I’m not sure. Andrew isn’t on iChat right now so I can’t ask.
Ah, great. Only problem…the insanely great T-shirts discriminates against fat guys like me. I wear a 3XL (or 3XLT if they have tall sizes) and I like my shirts loose fitting. Not only do they not sell t’s over XL, but they say their snug fitting, I’d probalby need a 4 or 5 XL, so as much as I’d like to, you won’t see me wearing a T any time soon!
It’s important to remember (and I wish this was advertised more often), that you can help Fluther out by using it to buy anything on Amazon. For example, I bought a new GPS on Amazon this Black Friday. All I did, was come here first, obtain a link to the GPS, click on THAT link (it’s present in the live preview), and then buy it. I don’t pay a single extra cent, and Fluther gets a 10% (or something like that) kickback for the purchase. Easy way to help Fluther out while Xmas shopping :P
How to create a link to Amazon: same as any other link, instead of following the colon with a site link, you just write amazon. Ex: “text”: amazon (without the space between the colon and amazon)
Real Example: nuvi 255W (this is the GPS I purchased!!!)
Or, Dale, we could witness the first sighting of the Fluther belly shirt.
And trust me Shilolo, no one wants to see THAT.
@PnL. OK. I really don’t understand how to do the Amazon thing.
I don’t know what you mean “come here first and obtain a link”....?
Really, I shop on Amazon and I could do this, but I have no idea what you are talking about….?
Are there step by step instructions somewhere….?
Couldn’t you just start typing a quip anywhere and create a link (it shows you how to do it right under the box you’re typing in), and in the live preview, click on the link you created, and then just abandon the quip?
@dalepetrie…..that is the only way I can see to do it…?
Snoopy – basically what dale said. For example, if you want to purchase the nuvi 255, once you know what you want, you go to any Fluther thread, start typing a quip, make the link, see it in live preview, click on it, and then you are good to go. (you can delete your quip). SImilarly, you can act like you are writing a new Q, and just make the link in the description section of the Q, and do it that way too (and then don’t submit the question). Does that make more sense?
Sweet. I’m in.
Thanks for letting me know about how it works, guys.
i get paid €50 a month for social engineering, isn’t that grand ? by the way, BPS suck richy, your currency is my toiletpaper…especially the bills with the queen on them !
Yes, PnL that does make sense.
I would suggest that the “average” Fluther user probably doesn’t know how to do that though…
Maybe the powers that be can post a “do you like this site? Please do you share to support it….”, explaining the things Rich does (especially the Amazon thing).
@Snoopy: I’ve forwarded your comment to Andrew.
Moderators get paid?!?!?!
@90s_kid – no, they don’t. read the rest of the thread.
Would we not deserve to get paid?
I read it all but I skim thru so maybe I missed something.
I would settle for a Chipotle gift card. Mmmmm burrito.
More of an Itsu or Wokon kind of guy. Do you Americans have either of them?
nope. and the only reason you say that is because you haven’t tried chipotle.
And you say that this isn’t off topic moddies?
[mod says:] It’s just fun banter, and the question has been fully answered now. Generally that’s okay with us, because people have the information they need and can un-follow the topic if they’re not interested anymore. You can always report activity you find disruptive using the flag link, and we’ll have a little debate behind the scenes and decide what should happen. I’ve removed my own posts before because I posted something silly. Hope this helps.
Speaking of paying the powers that be, I’m curious as to what revenue model the new Amazon ads fall into. Usually, such ads are either a little bit per click, or a slightly larger amount if the click leads to a purchase. I saw the blog entry about this, but is that the only way to drive revenue?
I’m curious because I’d like to use the ads in the way that best supports Fluther. If it’s just by the click, I’ll click more. If it’s per purchase, I would go out of my way to click-through from Fluther if I want to buy something from Amazon anyway.
It might be none of my business, though.
We get paid per purchase through Amazon. Thank you so much for caring about us!
Does it matter if the purchase is the exact book pictured in the ad, or can it be anything?
@laureth: You can search for what you want on the sidebar, then click and purchase. I haven’t looked up whether we get a percentage if you buy something OTHER that what was displayed when you click through.
I’ll be happy with a Target gift card. Or ice cream :)
Snoopy – No No NOOO!!!! Chipotle >>>>> Moe’s. Moe’s is just a horrible rip off. Don’t disappoint me like this….
