Cell phones in 1998?

Asked by writewoodz (13points) December 10th, 2008

Writing a novel that begins in Hawaii—a single mom, coming home from her VP corporate work. Wanted to find out what her son had called her about. (Was too busy to hear it all..) Someone said why didn’t she use a cell—did they, then? Who, costs? pagers, maybe?

Didn’t they tunnel, quantifying efficacy and the conditions at Chernobyl?

Yes. They had cellular phones then. Some people still had pagers, as well. I believe I had my second mobile phone in ‘98. It was a Nokia and it wasn’t any larger than phones today (unlike the big Motorola I had as my first cell).

I had my first cell phone in ‘99, and I used a pager for a couple years prior to that.

Thanks for editing your question, now my first response looks like I’m going bonkers

Yep. I had a Nokia in 1999 comparable in size to my phone now. Most phones back around that time were just a block of phone for most people. Not very many flip phones and no sliding. And almost no color displays. Unles you were paying out the ass for four colors. :P

I got my first cell in 1994. By 1998, they were quite common and not too expensive. At that time I also had a Nokia. I think the Motorola StarTak was the “it” phone for people with money at that time.

I had cell phone in 1998….it was about 2 inches thick and longer than my hand. I called it the chunky monkey.

I also had a pager——that I just finally got rid of about 3 months ago.
I know, I know

I finally got a decent flip phone about a year ago….

My mom and dad had cell phones then. Then were a bit smaller than a cordless phone (smaller on either end and thinner). But not a lot smaller.
