Have you ever had a gun pointed at you?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) December 11th, 2008

Long ago, I was sneaking through a fence at night to visit Tikal, in an attempt to avoid the fee. I didn’t have any money on me. I was with a group of college students, and was climbing over the fence, when, out of nowhere, a guy in fatigues shows up in front of me. He asks me for a bribe, but I don’t have money on me, so he points the rifle at me.

No, thank goodness! So what happened next?

Are you aiming for question of the year? What the heck is Tikal? A gentleman’s club?

Oh, and no, I have not had a gun pointed at me. I have had a wicked lesbian mob come after me with various vibrators however. That’s another story…

A few years back, while tending bar in Oakland, I had some dude pull the ol’ gun-in-pocket trick. I was trying to close and there was no one around. He was trashed and pissed that I wouldn’t serve him. The guy claimed he had a gun, though I didn’t necessarily believe him. He hopped over the bar, grabbed a bottle of expensive whiskey, poured half of it on the counter, and stumbled out cursing.

I was surprised at how calm I remained but perhaps that’s because I never saw the ‘gun.’

I’ve been shot at, so I suppose. I never saw the gun, though.

@knot: Do tell!

Yes, I have… shot as well. I don’t remember what question it’s in, but I posted the story within the last several weeks.

I got caught in the middle if a bank robbery in Oakland once. Bullets were flying as they were shooting it out with law enforcement. Another time, on our way to the Oakland ball park, we were stopped in traffic and there was another shoot out. The police used our vehicle as a shield just like in the movies. We had our children in the car!!! Husband hit the gas and got out of there as quick as possible.

Yes. double barrel sawn of shot gun at a range of maybe 2–3 paces. They fired but missed. (Cheap bullet “resistant” glass does actually work.)
Revolver. (not fired)
MP-5 by London armed police. They mistook me for a suicide bomber but thankfully weren’t in one of their shoot first, ask questions later moods.

I was skateboarding by myself in a parking lot one night. This guy came walking up and started asking me for directions then pulled out a gun and demanded everything in my pockets and my skateboard. I only had like 3 bucks on me. He told me, ” Start walking and don’t look back or I will shoot you.” I remember walking off being scared I was going to be shot in the back. I walked maybe a block then finally looked back. He was gone. I had to walk home.

Yes, but I was the one pointing it, so I don’t know if that counts.

I’ve had a knife at my throat, though, and that was pretty scary. I was fourteen or fifteen years old, babysitting my nephews after school until my sister got home from work. Her next door neighbor was a kid in my class and he was allowed to come over to play video games with the boys. One day my love of swords and knives came up and he said he had a small collection and went to get them so I could see. Eventually, I wound up backed up into a corner with a blade against my neck. I think he only stopped because my littlest nephew started crying and said he’d tell if the guy didn’t go away.

@MacBean: Holy Crap…on both accounts!

@MacBean, I second augustlan. And of course, it makes me want to hear the story behind the first event (which does count, in my book, since I think when I’m like that, I am really two different people, one of whom believes homicide is the only way to stop the pain).

2 guns, 6 knives, and a hammer.

Tyrantxseries: I don’t know which would be worse:
All at once? Or on 9 separate occasions?

tyrantxseries's avatar

9 separate occasions

BoyWonder's avatar

No but I’ve been shot at on the highway in a high speed chase.

jholler's avatar

yes. Been blown up, shot at, had rockets fired at me, and I’m also in tyrantx’s hammer club, ironically enough.

Who hasn’t had a gun pointed at them?

Nullo's avatar

Once or twice, but never with malicious intent.

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

Yes. Hundreds of them, from pistols to heavy artillery.

BoyWonder's avatar

Actually yea this asshole I know (friend of mine) did point a gun at me once and pulled the trigger to show that it wasn’t loaded. I shoulda kicked him in the head for that one but was too much in shock from what he did…

Nullo's avatar

Now that I think about it, one of my cousins shot me with a BB gun once. Left a big ol’ welt.
I dunno if that counts.

Yes, what if one had a gun pointed at them? Would anyone have the innate value system of Colombine students? This is a question one and all must answer. Isn’t life all about having something worth living for and being willing to die for? I saw a bumper sticker that said: “If you don’t stand behind our troops, you’re welcome to stand in front of them.” I know you are not talking about war but aren’t we talking about what we do when the rubber meets the road? If it is about losing your life as a mom/pop shopkeeper over a small change robbery then no it is not worth it, hit the deck and let them have what they want, but if it is a principle that governs your life values, then the gut instinct takes over and you just react with whatever is deepest in you.
