What's with all the Facebook invites?

Asked by PupnTaco (13895points) December 11th, 2008 from iPhone

I got flooded with almost a dozen emails today saying so-and-so (all legit known friends) wants to add me to their group on Facebook with a link to accept.

Trouble is, I’m not on Facebook and have no desire to be.

Are these legit invites?

They could be legit.

There’s an option on Facebook to search your address book, and it will give you the option of inviting contacts who aren’t already signed up to join.

Or it could be crap.

Facebook likes to trick people…

But they came from ten different people, all within a few hours.

That is odd. I’m active on Facebook, and I don’t get group invites that often. Could the invites be for actual events that people are asking you to RSVP to? That could be a possibility. Otherwise, ignore.
By the way, have you asked your friends why they invited you since you’re not on Facebook?

I’m not on Facebook either and have had 16 or 18 invites in the last couple of weeks. I know all of the people but have never indicated a desire to visit in Facebook format. Now I’m getting news links via Facebook, from some of the people who invited me to their facebook page.

It’s possible that a group was just getting popular and was at that time circulating among people you know. Also, if you have a friend who is not on facebook, it gives you the option of sending them invites anyway if you know their email address, and because it’s people you know I would guess that the situation.

Uh, I think PupnTaco is talking about invitations to JOIN facebook, not the event/group invites we facebook users are accustomed to.

Is that true, Dave?
