Ok so I don’t know any of the actors, or the director, or even if it was a Hollywood film (I have a suspicion it may have been British in fact). But the plot might ring a bell if anyone’s seen it:
There has been some sort of nuclear disaster and the whole planet is destroyed except for 5 or 6 men, 2 women and a cat, that get marooned on a desert island. They can hear nothing on the radio, and assume everyone else is dead. The men (including a priest) take it upon them to restart the human race, by impregnating the younger of the two women (the other one is too old). And in the rest of the film they fight each other off for mating rights, until they all eventually kill each other.
I saw this one on BBC around 1995, and I think it was fairly new at the time, so I’m guessing late 80s, early 90s…does it ring any bells?

I saw something in the same vein, only there was only one white woman left, and two men, one white and really mean and one Black, and sweet and kind. I saw this a long time ago, but it was all about them fighting over the woman. The race thing must have been the little jangle for the audience of maybe 30 years ago. No idea of the name of this, but they were all that was left of the human race. Wasn’t too pretty. I think the woman ultimately had to decide.
no, that’s not the one, though it sounds like interesting. In the one I mean all the men just got more and more violent, until in the end nobody got to date the girl. I think that even the old woman died somehow, and then the younger one was left all alone with the cat. But not sure. Thanks though, I am sure someone will have seen it and remember.
Sounds cool. Was it a comedy?
well not supposedly, even though the fact that they all killed each other off was comic I guess. I think it was more of a regular Robinson Crusoe type movie (like “Lost” or “Castaway” or something) except that it was making that point about violence. Could be seen from a feminist perspective I guess, though I would not classify it as a “feminist” movie.
I thought I had seen every post-apocalyptic movie ever, but this one stumps me. Are you sure it’s not an episode of a TV show?
Well I’m pretty sure, because I watched almost all of it and there was a developing story and an ending, it was over an hour long (probably 2 or so) and unless it was one of these “twilight zone” type theme episodes (which are short stories in their own right) I cannot imagine it being part of a series.
It may have been a non-Hollywood producion. None of the actors was famous (at least I didn’t know them at the time) though some faces were familiar. I’m thinking it could be a British movie. And it was generally well-made (as opposed to some low-budget idependent stuf). It felt very much like “Lost” in the theme, relationships and so on. People stuck there, fighting each other, getting violent, hierarchies forming. It was mainly about which of the males would end up fertilising the one and only female.
Lost? As in the recent TV series about a plane crash off Australia? No, I watch that. I said it feels like “Lost” but it’s definitely not it (I watched it more than 10 years before the first “Lost” episode was even written).
First of all, “Lost” is not British. Secondly it’s a series and not a film. Thirdly, there are several women (plus a dog) and not 2 women and a cat. The film I’m thinking about has far fewer people, and one of them is a priest. And above all, “Lost” is recent (still running) whereas that movie I’m thinking about was made in the ‘80s.
I have looked on IMDB but find nothing. My only real hope is some feminist doing gender studies at university or something. It had that angle, more than the Robinson Crusoe one.
Thanks for trying though LOTGK.

Yes Lulandra, it was the right answer. I found it but forgot to mention it here. Her name is actually Gorris I think. I tried buying it online, downloading it, even asked the director herself for a copy but still can’t find it. Suprising because it was actually a pretty good movie. Apart from the feminist point it makes (which doesn’t affect the plot unless you think about it), it’s a mainstream Robinson Crusoe type movie, well made, easily watchable.
Thanks for the answer and if you get a chance, watch it. It’s worth it :)
