Apart from the UK who else in the World likes America?

Asked by oasis (980points) December 14th, 2008

It would seem that the US is not very popular around the world, why do you think that is?
Do you think that we stand alone?
Do you feel ill at ease because of our unpopularity?

I think the UAE likes us. My nephews moved to Dubai and were like Rock Stars.
When my Daughter lived in Vietnam they really treated her well too.

What makes you think the UK likes America?

Isn’t Japan very friendly with American policy?

Flawed's avatar

I don’t think Americans like America at the moment- change of political direction next year will change world view of the good ole USA

This is an interesting question! I combed through this Wikipedia entry and would list these states as having a pro-American orientation based on official foreign policy by governments, not populist opinion. I think that’d be a very different list.

The time taken for my intense research was due to the few minutes I have now waiting for dinner and looking at relatively recent (post WWII) developments.

IsraelStrong cooperation in all diplomatic dimensions and shared adversarial relations with a variety of Middle Eastern states

Republic of China (Taiwan)Shared adversarial relations with People’s Republic of China (China)

South KoreaExtensive humanitarian aid and military support from the US, shared adversarial relations with North Korea

IndiaExcellent trade activity, shared adversarial relations with Pakistan

BulgariaSignificant participation in recent US military campaigns, joint military bases

KosovoSupported their move for independence through shared ideologies and continues to support through aid funds.

PolandAs mentioned by seVen, very close ties through continued military support and participation in a variety of modern US campaigns. Has commited to supporting an American interceptor that was to be part of the Star Wars missle defense system (this now looks unlikely under Obama)

JapanServes as a strong partner to the US – Asia relations. Close economic, military, and even cultural exchange ties. A shared concern over a more powerful China (PRC) and North Korea’s instability.

I would not agree that Iraq has amenable ties with the US right now. While the interim government does, it’s not in a strong power position and there are significantly stronger political powers in Iraq that vehemently oppose US intervention.

Interesting tip – if you ever want a quick read on US – X country relations virtually every country has a ’country-United States relations’ article. Either plug the country into this URL: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/country-United_States_relations or Google search for “United States country relations wiki”...

I do not think this racist nation will acknowledge a connection with a small African nation that was founded by former American slaves. We should. But we won’t. Not even with Obama in office. I pray that I am proven wrong in this.

artificialard's avatar

Daloon could you be more specific by “connection”? Certainly the US like most other countries participate in the UN and have regular diplomatic relations with many Africa states…

Liberia, I believe, was founded by former slaves. I think they were either kicked out of the US, or they chose to go there to land they were given. The connection exists.

What I’m saying is that I believe there are a lot of Americans who will never know of, or acknowledge the connection. I believe this is due to racism.

We owe Liberia a lot, but we don’t step in when there is civil war that destroys a huge portion of the nation’s infrastructure and sends many of it’s people as refugees to other nations.

Even Obama, who has more recent roots in Africa than most American blacks (although, as far as I know, was not from slave stock), probably will not publicize any link to or support of Liberia. Too few people care.

I have a number of Liberian neighbors who tried hard to help their fellow Liberians during the civil war. I don’t know how successful they were. Yet, because of this link, and because many Liberians are supporting their relatives in Liberia, the country will probably remain a staunch friend, insofar as they can get their act together to do anything.

All countries in which the US had its’ troops in + all countries who the US has helped economically.

Mizuki's avatar

We help Egypt economically, are they our friends? We have troops in Iraq, do they like us?

cinderflubbin's avatar

I think we (America) promoted ourselves so much that the rest of the World couldn’t help but like us or at least notice us. And, technically, no country in the world is really friends with anyone else; they’re just allies till it no longer benifits them to be.

My sister was in Dubai last week and a non English speaking man started a conversation with her. He was trying to figure out where she was from. When she said USA he cheered, OBAMA!
