What do you give as a gift to a person who you don't know very well?

Asked by jessicajane (143points) December 14th, 2008

Both my brother and sister in law are coming to our house for Christmas this year. They both are bringing their new girlfriend/boyfriend, both of whom I do not know very well. I would like to get them a gift so they are not left out of the gift giving festivities. Any ideas as to what I should get them? My in laws have not given me any ideas :(

Dunkin Donuts gift cards would be nice

Movie night: Gift certificate to Netflix or Blockbuster, along with popcorn, candy, and a 2 liter bottle of soda.

When my kids have brought bf’s or Gf’s I have included them in the “what we do every year” presents. I always give the kids pajamas and perfume (or cologne) so I got that for them. I also made them a stocking with all the same stuff as the other kids. This may be different since you’re a sibling, but it might work, or spark an idea.
The other idea is something perishable like candles, bath soaps etc. That way, if they don’t like it they can say, “I loved it so much I used it all up!” and never feel bad if they get married some day and you show up at their house and the hand made trinket you gave them is in the bottom drawer in their bathroom.

I was going to say gift certificates to the movie theatre, very similar to augustlan.

Coffee cards are great too…to a local coffee joint. Or homemade goodies, which everyone enjoys. Or just do a joint gift to both of them and include their name in the card, like the movie idea or dinner out.

Every brownie has an edge. It was one of my favorite gifts. It did have brownies baked in it when I received it.

But $35.00 for a baking pan? I guess I haven’t cooked for a few years.

If it really works, I say it’s totally worth $35! I love me some “outside” brownies!

I like the idea of some stocking stuffers. Gift certs are good and reusable bags, stainless steel water bottle or coffee mug.

Is it just me or are cool recycle grocery bags in this year? I got some really cute one at Disneyland the other day and I even got some really cool ones at Nordstrom. I’m using them for stocking stuffers, but they could be great “volume” gifts to help the guests feel more comfortable and part of everything. They could be sad not being with their families this holiday. I always try to be sensitive to that.

Get them something universal that everyone can enjoy. Gift certificates, stuffed animals, etc.

@judi—reusable bags are one of the only markets that is still soaring (knock on wood!). I work for a really cool reusable bag company. I’ll send you a PM so it’s not spam : )

@Emilyrose: Please spam away! I’m looking for some cool bags!

Check out chicobag.com! We make awesome reusable bags that fold into their own pouch. It also has a carabiner so you can attach to to your belt, purse, backpack, whatever.

I usually give a giftcard for walmart or to the local music store because I believe music is a big part of peoples’ lives.

I’d like to put together a small package where I throw in some fresh baked cookies, various candies and a gift card to top it off. :)

Or if you’re really short on funds at the time you can make “coupons” where it’ll say “good for one home cooked dinner” or “good for one movie night out” since this is for family you can make family oriented ones like “one time use for watching the kids” etc….
