Have you or has anyone you know ever gotten a mail-order bride?

Asked by girlofscience (7572points) December 14th, 2008

Mail-order brides are certainly a fascinating concept!

I would love to hear personal accounts of people who have gotten one, been one, or known a person who has gotten one or been one.

How have the relationships worked out? What was meeting like? What was the wedding like? Does the couple genuinely enjoy each other? Please offer any information you know!

I ordered on once but they forgot to poke air holes in the box :(

I really hope someone responds that has some kind of first-hand knowledge of this!

I just signed up for one of the websites and am currently browsing hundreds of beautiful Russian women. I am so curious about how this works.

The odds of anyone answering with a life story are slim.

But I would imagine it is like any relationship were you fuck for citizenship.

@johnpowell: I know that one member has an uncle who has a cousin (or something) who has a mail-order bride. (She has already told me everything she knows of the situation.)

According to wikipedia, 4,000–6,000 US marriages per year are a result of this sort of union. I think there’s a halfway-decent chance a member knows someone.

My boss at a seedy used car lot in Portland Oregon had a thing for Asian women. There was this guy that came through the car lot and sold bootleg movies and porn out of his trunk. He always bought the asian porn from the bootlegger. He also went on sex trips to Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. He eventually bought either a Thai bride or a Vietnamese bride. I cant remember for sure but he found her online went over there and got her.

girlofscience's avatar

@buster: He “bought” her? I’ve been reading about this, and I didn’t see anything that involved “buying” the girl.

Anyway, do you have any information about what happened afterwards? How did it work out when they met? How was their wedding? Their marriage? Etc.?

buster's avatar

Well he went through the steps I guess im not sure exactly how they did it. He treats her like a princess. She is a well kept woman.

girlofscience's avatar

@buster: Is she very hot?

Haha, I almost wonder why more men don’t do this…

buster's avatar

she was hot. maybe that why he went to vietnam or wherever first. so he could see first hand what he was getting

wundayatta's avatar

Why don’t more women do this? Contrary to popular belief, most men don’t want a blow-up doll for a spouse.

girlofscience's avatar

@daloon: There are far fewer mail-order husbands.

wundayatta's avatar

I’m sure if there were enough money in it, the supply would appear.

My uncle lives in an apartment complex with a guy who “ordered” a bride from the Philippines. He is 76, she is in her 40’s. He is stressed out, doesn’t really want to get married anymore. She is trying to gain citizenship, and wants my uncle to “get to know” another Filipino woman who she knows.

Being married for over 27 years, no, I haven’t had a mail order husband, and I think the people down the street are mail order, but not really sure. I don’t agree with it at all. Sorry.

This is much more common than many would think. The concept of “mail order brides” are often confused with military folks getting married overseas. When I was in college before Hong Kong went back to China, there were matchmakers trolling campus at UH offering 50k to marry. Several of my friends did this, as it is not uncommon in some areas. One that I am in touch with, is still with the girl he married, they seem like an ok couple.

My freshman history teacher in high school actually went to Russia and picked one. We got to meet her, and I hope he had gotten a discount. (Not the most attractive woman)

LKidKyle1985's avatar

Ha, its not too popular cause theres lots of stories of people doing that then the girl divorcing him for everything hes worth after she gets citizenship. i guess some are legit but who knows. I am actually engaged to an exchange student I met a couple years ago, though I don’t think that qualifies as mail order…

girlofscience's avatar

@Mizuki: People were getting paid $50,000 to marry one of the girls, or the other way around? If the other way around, who gets this money?

judochop's avatar

@gos: is thisvwhat your getting your guy friend for Xmas? Instead of that keychain?

@girlofscience——keep in mind, this was in the mid 1990’s just before Hong Kong went back to Communist China. I met my husband during that time and he had several offers, as did I. 50K was the rate, and there were plenty of takers——it was just not for me, too complicated, and I don’t get turned on by Chinese guys, no offence, just not for me.

The US citizen gets the money, 10k down, 20k after 1 yr, and the balance when the spouse is legalized (which can take a long time and lots of B.S.)

12 years ago my family bought a house from a guy, we got to know him a bit before the deal went down and he had actually purchased his bride. Details kinda hazy been sometime some Asian lady they had a 8 year old son together, they were pretty loving and it worked out for them… but that was some time ago.
