How do I optimize my Airport Extreme network ?

I went to the Aplle retailer today to get a Airport Extreme (AE) So I could stream movies to my Xbox, and have acsess my movies and music wirelessly..
My problem is that I the copying and streaming speeds are way to slow to be usefull for anything really, like 2/3 megabytes per second… My macbook and the AE both support the new n categoriced network protocoll, but my Ads modem (wich happens to be relatively new does not…)
Furthermore I tried to connect my Xbox to the AE, and while it connected to the interweb, it did not find any other machine on the network.
So, do any of you flutherites know how to set up this thing the optimal way ?
My gear:
A speedtouch 780wlt multimodem (wifi router and dsl modem in one)
A brand new Airport Express Router thingy
A USB2 HDD connected to the Airport Extreme
An Xbox 360 that needs cable connection (I do not intend to buy the wifi thing since it sits 5” from my AE
Oh and I use rivet to connect the macbook to the Xbox (rivet is a nice litle piece of software that makes the mac visible on the Xbox, for browsing and streaming)
I anyone have a good solution I would appreciate it greatly :D

Well, it seems to me that optimally you would have the Airport Extreme Base Station (henceforth, AEBS) doing all of the wired and wireless routing, since obviously it’s got the faster wireless. I’m not sure how you’d go about disabling the wireless radio on your DSL modem, but if you can’t do that you can just ignore that network and connect to the network your AEBS creates.
So your network looks like:
Internet
| firewall!
DSL modem
| firewall!
AEBS———————-
| wired clients (XBOX) | wireless clients (laptop)
That way, your laptop and XBOX will be on a LAN together. I’m not sure if the 360 has Gigabit Ethernet built in, but if it does and you get true n-throughput on your LAN, you shouldn’t have any problems with speed.
Keep in mind that:
– Any 802.11a/b/g device on your pristine n-capable network will cause ALL clients to fall back to g (54Mbit/s). Make sure everyone can do n.
– AEBS have had issues in the past with AirDisk performance. Just so you know.
Thank you, yes, belive i can disable the the wireless on the DSL modem, but the problem is when I connect the Xbox, it connects to the net, but i wil not find any machines on the network.
You say a 802.a/b/g device… doe that mean that my GF laptop wil slow the enitre thing down if she connects ? should not really be a problem if I make her use a cat5 ? the rest of the computers in the household are newer macs anyway…
I read about the aiir drive issues, but i recon I still should be able to stream a standard movie without to much buffering…. since i currently can stream 1080p movies with no problems as long as they are on my macbook ?
And I understand that it is a bit slower with wireless, but 5 min for a 150mb file is a tad to slow, right ?

OK, so currently you have the XBOX plugged into the AEBS with an Ethernet cable? And you’re unable to see the other devices on the network?
Make sure that:
* your laptop is connected to the AEBS network, not the DSL modem network
* your XBOX can otherwise access the Internet (I assume you’ve checked this)
In what configuration can your XBOX see the other computers on the network?
And yes, your girlfriend’s laptop will slow down the wireless performance. Yes, plugging her in with Ethernet will fix it.
