Do we know how to ask questions through IM yet?

Asked by robmandu (21331points) December 16th, 2008

How does using the instant message paradigm accommodate the Question, Details, Topics input fields?

Did I miss the help page?

For those of you using alternative interfaces, here’s a screenshot of the “Ask questions through IM!” message we’re seeing.

I don’t know anything about it, but I sure would like to disable the banner. I had hoped it would go away after I had seen it a few times, but alas this programming logic was not implemented. I mean, I would have been interested if AIM wasn’t the only IM client supported – in fact the terminology in the banner made me think that more than one IM service was added in already, so I was disappointed when I saw MSN wasn’t included, and now I don’t want to use the service, let alone be reminded of it each page view… :|

If you add an AIM account, you’ll see instructions on how to use the Flutherbot.

Yah, I’m was helping beta-test the notification feature. But at the time, it didn’t say anything about how to submit questions.

@gsiener, are you saying that it now does provide instructions detailing how to provide Question, Details, and Topics?

gsiener's avatar

That’s correct. If you type “help” it will give you a list of commands it recognizes. When you start down the “ask” path it guides you through the process.

@rob would you post a link to AIM so I can set up an account please? This looks like it will be pretty cool, and I’d like to give it a shot.

AIM == AOL Instant Messenger.

1. Go to the AIM Express Page.
2. Sign up for new account
3. Choose an AIM client (you only need one):

- the aforementioned AIM Express (just a web page)
– download AOL’s official client software to your PC
– download a third-party IM client, like Trillian that can interface with AIM and also Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, etc.

4. Add names to your buddy list, like the flutherbot
5. Start chatting away or asking Fluther questions.

Thanks so much! I’ll do this when I get home tonight.
