Any good booklight recommendations?

Asked by aidje (3662points) December 16th, 2008

I’ve tried a lot of booklights over the years, but I still haven’t found “the one.” It seems like they’re all some combination of too dim, too bright, too floppy, too bulky, too stiff, unclippable, book-damaging, and probably more negative qualities that I can’t think of at the moment. I’ve been so dissatisfied with the booklights I’ve tried that right now I just use my cellphone—and that’s certainly far from ideal.

Has anyone here found a booklight that they just love?

Great question. I’ve had the same problem, so I’ll be watching for answers. I’m glad you asked this question! Sorry I don’t have an answer.

I recently saw one that you wear over your ear, like a phone headset. Also, someone on here posted a link to a baseball hat w/ built in led lights in the brim. Of course, I can’t remember where I saw either of these things!

Stanley Halogen Shoplight 800 watts is what I use. Good for poor eyesight.

Perhaps I should have specified that I’m looking for a good travel booklight—one that I can carry in my satchel. :-)

Oh. In that case, Earlight. Hooks on your ear. You can wear 2 for poor eyesight. Don’t get the baseball cap light, it’s bad Feng Shui to wear a baseball cap to bed.

My personal favourite will always be the “Light Wedge”.

It’s not your average book light. You slip the “light wedge” under the page of the book and it softly illuminates it for you to read. I’ve found the light to be gentle but bright enough to read, and it doesn’t hurt my eyes. I’ve been able to read late into the night without strain.

I have the “paperback” size which is a little smaller, but you can also get bigger ones for those hardcovers. I can read those just fine with mine though. Oh, and it’s great for travel. I took mine to India with me and read a lot during the night.

I’ve been wondering about the Light Wedge. Given that it lights from underneath the page, I would worry about the text showing through from the other side. Is that not a problem? (It also kind of bothers me that I would have to pay $35 to try it out, and that different books require different sizes.)

@aidje

I’ll be honest, it sort of depends in my experience. Depends on the paper and ink used.

If the ink on the back shows through when you use the Light Wedge, you can always just use the light on top of the page and it works just as fine. :)

So yeah, either way it’s not a big factor. Light Wedge has a bunch of different sizes depending on the books you have, so you have some choice.
