Wow, you asked a toughy. I’m waffling right now between three or four…
I’m going to start with A Fish Called Wanda, and probably change my mind shortly. Darn you!
Pineapple express was really funny, but I think I’d have to say the funniest movie i have ever seen was Jackass 1 or 2 (it’s so hard to pick).
office space, Clerks 1&2, Shrek, Hancock, American Psycho, Sin City,Interview with a vampire, Lord of War, Howard Stern Private Parts, Dawn of the Dead, Groundhog day, Lords of Dogtown, Jason movies(friday the 13th), Freddy movies(nightmare on elm st), next Friday,Friday,K-PAX, The dark knight.
if you watch one after another it counts as one
I can’t decide on just one so can I give you a list of funny favorites of mine? In no particular order?
Airplane & Airplane II
Caddyshack
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Blazing Saddles
Tootsie
Animal House
Trading Places
Young Frankenstein
Top Secret
Mr. Mom
Tommy Boy
The Naked Gun
Aside from stand-up I think Harold & Kumar #1 really made me laugh. Pineapple Express was great too.
Tommy Boy, I still snort with laughter over that one. (I’m such a lady).
1. Some Like It Hot 2. Tootsie 3. Dr. Strangelove 4. Annie Hall 5. Duck Soup 6. Blazing Saddles 7. M*A*S*H 8. It Happened One Night 9. The Graduate 10. Airplane!
edit: The American Film Institute’s list.^^
The Big Lebowski. The part where they are spreading the ashes is the best.
Blazing Saddles hands down.
My boyfriend and I couldn’t stop laughing at step brothers…everyone thought we were idiots.
either super troopers or caddyshack… a tie
Clue
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (of course!)
So I Married An Axe Murderer
Ugh there are more I just can’t think of them
I have a lot of favorites but I am gonna say Run Ronnie Run
@Madcapper: I LOVE Run Ronnie Run.. I didn’t think of that one! Definitely a favorite. We bought it as a joke because my fiancee’s name is Ronnie, but I ended up loving it.
At the time, There’s Something About Mary was the funniest thing I’d ever seen. It loses something when you see it again, though.
For me it’s a toss up between Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” and Mike Judge’s “Office Space”.
It’s between Pineapple Express and Dumb & Dumber
@queenzboulevard I don’t mean to be a jerk, but Dumb & Dumber was a terrible film.
@queenz- my cat is named Killer Boots Man
As much as I hate to admit it I thought that The Ringrer was pretty funny.
as of the past two months:role models, step brothers, young Frankenstein.
no The Gods Must Be Crazy fans?
@Justin – The Gods Must Be Crazy was hilarious. Great choice.
Superbad cracked me right up.
sorry to be all early-90s on people, but Mrs Doubtfire was really funny :)
Did anyone else find Evil Dead 1 hilarious?
Coming to America. Definitely old school, but Eddie Murphy is masterful.
“Good morning New York!” “Eh, fuck you.” “Yes, yes!!! Fuck you too!!!!”
@hypeserver, Office Space and Dogma are good calls. I’m sure there are others. Why are the funniest movies so hard to recall?
Oh, yeah. The Holy Grail!
The Gods must be Crazy is very funny.
Best In Show. Other favs: Beerfest, Anchorman, Airplane, Better Off Dead and Young Frankenstein
“THIS is my BOOM stick!” Love Evil Dead.
Evil Dead trilogy (Groovy) and Blues Brothers (The BAND, Elwood, the BAND!)
Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein
Love Evil Dead! Heathers is an old favorite too.
The Austin Powers trilogy (as said by Jake on Two and a Half men lol)
I know I picked Clerks, and I agree Office Space is a very close second, but I also gots to give a shout out to Waiting for Guffman.
@dale: You’re my hero. No one I know likes Waiting for Guffman. That movie is pure genius.
@Dale; All of Christopher Guest’s movies rank high on the list. “Best in Show, This is Spinal Tap,“etc.
Fried Green Tomatos
SNL’s Best of
-Mike Myers
-Will Ferrell
-Jimmy Fallon
-Chris Farley
I’ve showed Guffman to a few people who clearly just don’t get the humor. All I have to say is they’re bastard people.
Spinal Tap. Oh, that entire movie is to laugh. “Yes, but this goes to 11.”
I re-watched A Mighty Wind recently. At the end of the picture, Catherine O’Hara’s folksinger character, Mickey Crabbe, earnestly warbles an ode to Sure-Flo incontinence products at at a trade show. O’Hara played it absolutely straight and I guffawed for at least 2 minutes.
Who doesn’t love some bit of work by Christopher Guest or his crew, I ask you?
I second, or third Guffman!
@dlm yeah it’s not a well known movie but it is a spin-off of a Mister Show skit which was a hilarious show and David Cross is just plain funny! Glad to see someone else has seen it!
@Dale; You need to find yourself some new friends w. better taste.
Well, I can think of 4 people I watched it with…my parents and my brother in law and his significant other. My dad doesn’t care for much besides Westerns and my mom is partial to the kinds of movies you’d find on the Hallmark Channel. As for my brother in law and his SO, they’re both former meth addicts and I think their brains are a bit like swiss cheese…my BIL’s favorite movie is Battlefield Earth. I just thought maybe they’d get a kick out of it because my BIL is gay and he and his SO both make fun of people like Corky St. Clair. My wife and I have been TRYING to expose them to good movies, but they always seem lukewarm on whatever we pick, and they always bring over some piece of dreck like “Epic Movie”. About the only movies all 4 of us have ever agreed on are Margaret Cho concert films.
Loved Best in Show – ”... macadamia nut. That one drove my mother craaazy!”
Christopher Guess rocks!
I guess he does. Mrs. Guest may disagree.
@gailcalled – Are you suggesting that Jamie Lee Curtis doesn’t think her husband rocks? She seems to have a pretty decent sense of humor herself, lol.
True. They are a wonderful pair, the Guests.
I’ve seen many of the movies mentioned and didn’t find most of them funny. Probably because comedies are usually meant to make you laugh a bit while you watch them but are generally not memorable.
“The Life of Brian” had some lasting jokes (especially the bit with the spaghetti sauce) and I loved the “Big Lebowski”, especially the bit where John Goodman won’t work on a Saturday and Lebowski reminds him “but you’re not even Jewish!”.
A really witty film I saw recently was “Burn After Reading” which is hilarious without being slapstick, and is fast-paced but also clever. And of course it’s by the Cohen Brothers. Watch it :)
Well, if you are going to demand smart & funny, I’d have to go with I <3 Huckabees.
I think Office Space and all the Christopher Guest movies do qualify as both smart AND funny.
After brooding on this, I would have to vote for SOME LIKE IT HOT as #1.
What, nobody mentioned Trapped in a Closet?
The Spongebob Squarepants Movie
