How do I keep my two dogs from jumping our fence?

Asked by jonsblond (44203points) December 17th, 2008 from iPhone

I have blue heelers that are a year old and pretty well behaved except they keep jumping our 4ft fence. We have no money left for classes or fixing the fence since we spent over a thousand in landscaping just to keep them from digging under. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem and my vet suggested that I get on the roof with a soda can filled with rocks. Without the dogs seeing you, watch them. When they start to jump, toss the can close to them WITHOUT hitting them. This will startle them enough to change their attention from going over the fence. Keep in mind that Blue Heelers are VERY intelligent and their jumping may be a function of boredom. Many people with Blue Heelers, have the dogs by their side all of the time. Good luck.

You could always put up a radio fence around the yard. The dogs wear a special collar that gives them a small shock when they get within a foot or two of radio fence perimeter. It’s not that strong a shock, sort of like a strong a static shock (I tested it myself). It’s really just to startle them. It usually works well, but some dogs ignore the shock and cross the perimeter. Might be worth a try. You wouldn’t even have to bury the wire, you could string up along the existing fence.

There really isn’t a way to fix this without spending some kind of money – unless you want to sit on your roof for a few days in a row until they get the point as missingbite suggested. Check your local recycling center to see if they have any cheap wood that has been donated because of flaws etc. so that you can add to the top of the fence (making it taller plus maybe angling it towards your yard like an overhang). You could also check your local hardware stores, lumber yards, etc. to see if they have any warped or otherwise flawed wood for discount. Good luck with this! Just one of the many reason Heelers are usually farm dogs! ;)

Either take them outside on leash or build a bigger fence.

Have you already tried the anti jump harness?
My guess is the dogs are not getting any where near the amount of exercise they need., I usually consider Heelers to be about a 3 mile a day dog if they are not in a home where they are able to do the work they are bred to be doing.

They actually do get to spend time on a farm now and then but during these cold winter days not so much. I admit they don’t get as much exercise as needed but I was hoping our large backyard would allow them to run off some steam when time does not allow for those long walks.
