Should your socks match your shoes or your pants?

Asked by daisy (496points) December 17th, 2008

I was recently told by a coworker that I was doing it wrong. My socks matched my pants, not my shoes. Am I a fashion disaster? Is this a topic for the show, ‘What Not to Wear’? Which way do you do it?

Socks should match your shoes and your shoes should match your belt. You might want to pickup the book “Details.”

well, I always have white socks. that way I can’t go wrong. but if they are really interested in just your socks matching your shoes and pants then they should keep their eyes to themselves. lol

Shoes match the belt. Socks are whatever color makes them less noticeable. In black pants and black shoes, this is black socks. With white shoes (runners maybe) and blue jeans, I’d say white socks. Based on you matching socks to pants, I’d say you’re more right than wrong.

I am pretty sure that you can get away with black socks with blue & black slacks and jeans, black or blue shoes. I sure see a lot of business guys at the airport wearing black socks with those colors. (Hey, it gets boring waiting at the airport!)

Personally, I count myself lucky if my socks match each other

I always have trouble with this. Example: Jeans with tan suede clogs. Blue socks or tan? I’ve personally decided that I like blue (heathered/marled colors that pretty well match the jeans) better in this instance…but am never sure! I think for men’s business wear the rule is socks match the pants. But I’m a girlie…does the same apply?

Socks should compliment your outfit and more than likely your shoes will also, so unless it is something extremely noticable, like pink socks with green shoes I wouldnt worry about it too much.

miasmom's avatar

@augustlan, you could go either way, but if the blue was very close to the jean color I would pick that choice first.

My fashionably anal mother always said socks match your shoes (and of course shoes match your belt). And never wear brown shoes with blue pants, jeans being the exception.

Never let others tell you what to wear, if you’re comfortable with how you do it why worry.

If my husband is wearing jeans and deck/boat shoes that are medium brown, what color should his socks be? I know you’re not supposed to wear socks with deck shoes, but he just can’t do it.

I think he should wear shorti-type socks, or a khaki colored sock.

I think a slightly lighter shade brown would look nice, almost beige, that would be my first choice.

@daisy. Hmmmm…..I would think it should all match…..?

Can you share the color scheme example in which your co workers felt you transgressed….?

No, but your underwear should match your socks.

this may be a question for gentlemen’s quarterly, but if i wear taupe or khaki-colored slacks and my loafers are hershey brown suede, i match the socks with the slacks. it continues the color to the shoe for harmonious contrast and balance.

if i wear white linen slacks and beige, white or carmel loafers, i wear white socks for the same as mentioned above.

shoes definitely must match the belt. if you have on brown loafers and an orange carmel belt, it just throws everything off.

best bet: continuity. keep colors and contrasts true. just please do not wear black shoes with white pants unless you are a sailor.

if i wear navy blue suit pants, brown shoes should be worn. in that case my socks would be a faint combination of blue and brown to marry the two colors.

Shoes. Review the term “match” as well.

Thanks for all your helpful comments. My color combination was this, I had navy slacks with navy socks and black shoes. My coworker mentioned that this was not correct. She is a friend and this was all good natured, not judgmental. I did notice her major fashion faux pas a few days later when she was wearing one black and one navy sock. She dressed in the dark. I guess I never really thought about this before until she mentioned it and so I wondered what others do. Since I usually wear only black or brown shoes this would definitely cut down on how many socks I’d need.

Personally, I don’t mix black and navy. I always think people are trying to pass one for the other when they do that….

I would have chosen brown shoes and navy socks w/ the navy pants. But that is just me….?

daisy's avatar

@charliecompany34, I like that! Marrying the 2 colors. Hmmmm and I usually wear black shoes with navy blue pants… I just have it all wrong.

@Snoopy, brown socks with navy pants and black shoes? Oh dear, I’m so confused now!

daisy's avatar

I clearly need help getting dressed in the morning.

@all to be fair to poor daisy….I mistyped my initial response and that is what she is referencing….Thank goodness for the edit window

daisy's avatar

So Snoopy, we do think alike in that your socks match your pants like mine did. We just chose different colored shoes.

Snoopy's avatar

LOL. I suppose. The funny thing is, I woulda been fixated more on the whole black shoes w/ navy pants as opposed to what the socks were matched up to….

Ah, such is the life of fashion divas like ourselves…..

daisy's avatar

I guess that’s a subject for a whole other question. Black or brown shoes with navy pants? LOL

daisy's avatar

I have an important luncheon today where I am representing my employer. I’m not taking any chances. It’s black shoes, black socks, and black pants. I’m sure that they all will notice this and will bring their business to us because of this. LOL

Snoopy's avatar

@daisy. Whew! Better to be safe than sorry….

Good luck!

I’m the same as harp. I can never find matching socks. And usually neither of them will match either my shoes or my pants. Oops.
