Grey Hair At 14?

Asked by Amish_Ninja (230points) December 18th, 2008

I’ve had bits of grey hair spring up more and more each year, since I’ve turned 14. I’m currently 16, and I dye my hair. Will someone please tell me if I can have any hope of getting rid of these hairs are am I doomed for eternity to live with this? I take good care of myself, and try and lead a stree free diet.
I won’t ever feel good about my hair unless I keep dying it, but it’s becoming a economic issue for me, even if I get my hair done at a beauty school. I have been getting it perm. dyed, but my hair simply grows too fast. Leave me a comment or something if this has/is happening to you as well around this age.

Yes, you’re doomed. It’s genetics. Well, it could be that you have a medical condition that affects the production of your hair pigment. But if your parents had grey hair while young, it is likely that it is genetics and thus incurable until we’re able to hack and modify our own DNA.

I’m in the same boat as you, although not as dramatic. My mum had a full grey head before 30, and I’ve had sparse grey hairs since I was 13. However my perspective is different from yours. I’m looking forward to it – grey hair is one color you cannot truly dye your hair into becoming, so I’ll be so unique with a head of long flowing grey hair at such a young age! And you know what that means? I can finally cosplay as Sephiroth!

Wow, that’s interesting. My grandmother (father’s side) had mostly grey hairs by the time she was a senior in high school! Sometimes things happen like that. Blame genetics. It hasn’t happened to me though (I have my mom’s hair) but I wanted to let you know that this does indeed happen.

Grey hair colour is beautiful! I kinda wish I had some in fact, it’s awesome. Why not just let it go untreated for a while and see what it looks like…just give it some time. You may learn to like it.

@dynamicduo haha I loved the Sephiroth comment :D

Grey roots do not go well with black hair. That Sephiroth comment was….wow. My dad went totaly grey at 13. It would seem like guys would have an easier time since if they didn’t like it, they could just shave it all off.

.-.

Sorry Amish_Ninja, I’m not able to tell by your tone whether you found my Sephiroth comment positive or negative. But I’m quite serious and it wasn’t a joke or meant to be an insult. That really is one of my goals, even more so because I’m a girl and Sephiroth is a guy, I figure I could pull off a great cosplay :)

@Amish Ninja

Grey hairs don’t go well with black hair? Really? I must disagree. I know a lot of people who have black hair (my father included) who started to go grey. The result is a charming “speckled” colour. I like to call it “salt and pepper” hair and I think it’s utterly adorable.

My hair grew in white right in front when I was about 21. I was told my grandmother went white all over at about the same age. You know what? It made her seem ageless. Over many decades she never seemed to change at all. It was wonderful.

I’ve been greying since I was 4. No, seriously. It’s really sparse, but I’m stuck with it. Just like you are! Stuck with it. But I like mine. Bright, clearish white. I’m a little bit looking forward to having them all over—I was always afraid I’d go pink when I got older, the white is a nice alternative.

I’ve had something similar happen to me…once the hair on the sides my head gets longer, you can see gray hairs here and there. Not too many, but you can see them. I’m almost 24, and I’ve had them since the age of about 17.

I blame mine on the stresses of retail. Partially genetics too, my dad has the gray hair look kind of like George Clooney going on. http://www.takepart.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/clooney-george-photo-george-clooney-6233612.jpg

Like dynamicduo said, it’s genetics, you have no hope.

Rock it, no one really cares so much that they’ll stare. It might elicit a few reactions – mainly curiosity. One of my coworkers is 27 and she’s had gray hairs spring up all over since she was a young teenager. She has jet black hair, and besides the occasional, “Oh, it just grows that way.” (duh.) She’s never had to comment on it. A lot of think it’s kind of neat. :)

Erm…it doesn’t sound like you’re taking good care
of yourself and trying to lead a stress-free diet.
Not that it is entirely-related, since grey hairs have more to do with genetics.

You know it could be worse – my grandfather was bald by 18. Of course, the good thing was that it made him look older. :-)

I got my first gray hair (white, really) when I was in 6th or 7th grade. My mother had a streak of gray on the side from about the age of 24. I knew a guy in junior high/high school that had jet-black hair with a white patch in the front. It’s not that uncommon. I’d say run with it and be an individual! However, if you really want to keep dying it, do it yourself…it’s not too difficult, and far cheaper.

When I started dyeing my hair (because more of it was getting gray), I carefully separated out my white streak, and the stylist wrapped it in plastic wrap so it wouldn’t get colored. People would ask, “Did you have that put in?” and I would smile and say no, it was completely natural. They never asked about the other part.

My hair turned a dull dark gray when I was 15, after a bout of pneumonia from which I nearly died. My color came back in a few months and has stayed with me ever since. Gray, I am told, is easy to turn blond, which I can tell you for sure, is much more fun than any other color you can have (getting laid-wise).

I have a friend whose head is covered with cool-looking speckled grey hair. It initially confused and intrigued me. Maybe the grey hair will add to your mysterious ninja aura?

asmonet's avatar

@MontyZuma: This redhead disagrees.

EmpressPixie's avatar

@asmonet: I knew there was a reason I liked you! Redheads unite!

RandomMrdan's avatar

So now all Amish Ninja has to do is nearly die from pneumonia, and hope it turns blonde, and then she can get laid easily =)

asmonet's avatar

@empress: rawr! i likes you too!

<< Another redhead…way more fun!

@Nimis That was my friend, not me. I’m not stupid enough to do that kind of thing. It clearly states that in the post, if you would have read it more carefuly.

Nimis's avatar

There seemed to be such a favourable tone in the post,
that I assumed you were doing it/considering on doing it as well.

Assumptions are silly though.
Sorry about that.

Im not sure what is going on, but one of my friends has a few gray hairs and shes only fifteen.

Amish_Ninja's avatar

I guess it’s just darn DNA, thanks for all the support and answers.

MissAnthrope's avatar

You’re not alone.. one of my best friends was completely gray by the time he was 12. At least you still have dark hair. ;)

90s_kid's avatar

I am 14 without grey hair. Sorry, kid.

Found my first grey hair at 15. At 60, I now have a head full of grey – and brown – and black – and blonde – that I pull into a pony-tail and let flow down to the middle of my back!
