Snowed in? hurricaned in? earthquaked in? what food, staple, drink can't you do without to weather that storm?
a few years ago, here in chicago, we invited the in-laws over for new year’s eve. turned out to be the night of an historic 21-inch snowstorm blizzard and we were holed up in the house for 2 days.
WITH IN-LAWS? egads!
good thing we had food in the house.
the storm was unexpected, but without firewood and meat, we probably would have eaten each other.

Candles and wine. The dusty, special occasion bottle of wine.
Bacardi, coke, hot cocoa. In that order.
We’re going to get a blaster here tonight with snow, ice, freezing rain, etc. We went to the grocery store yesterday & I got 5 12-packs of Diet Dr. Pepper. I’m all set now!
Cereal and soymilk. Coke and coffee would be nice too.
Water! I drink water all day long. On the rare occasion when we have plumbing work done, this drives me crazy. A storm that would cause damage? Ugh!
Beer and then we cook stuff out of the frizzer.
Toilet paper and bread. Toilet paper is a staple right? I got enough peanut butter and cheese and mustard to have have peanut butter or mustard sandwiches for weeks.
Beer and Pizza, in that order!
I’ll take water, tea, firewood, beef stew, popcorn, brewers yeast, blackbelttheater collection and my wife, daughter and dog.
H2O and all this talk about pizza is making me hungry, so pizza too!
I am still recovering from 5.5 days without power and with temps. in the teens. Let me know if you want a complete list. It is physically and psychically exhausting. One’s mind is not on pizza and beer, let me tell you. It really does feel like the veneer of the civilities that we take for granted are erased, particularly at 4:30 when the sun sets.
Firewood, wood burning stove, kindling, candles, flashlights and extra batteries, bathtub and stock pots filled with water, bottled water, gas stove, food that can be eaten uncooked and cold (cold pizza after four days would be very unappealing), land-line phone and battery-operated radio.
I couldn’t even get out because of trees and power lines down on driveway and road.
@gail: Are you digging out now? Is life getting back to normal? Where do you live?
I would try to transform some engine tools to provide me some heat. The snow can be usefull as a water. From water you can survive cuple of days then in no option the cannibalism.
