I am not sure about the “rich“guys. As for me, I like good food and if that has to be a local crowded outlet selling something great i almost always get it! If its an occasion then of course we like to have a ambiance as well.
I’ve never left a “fancy & expensive” restaurant hungry. But then again, I’ve never left a McDonalds hungry either. I’m not sure how to answer this question.
I believe it’s relative. A fancy dinner for a rich person might be on par with a hamburger at a diner for me, percentage-of-income-wise.
I also tend to think that dining out is often more about the experience, for rich people. That’s what all the music and waiters in ties and fancy drinks are for. I’m sure that the food is important, yeah, but not for filling up on cheaply. If they care about that, they can do it at home.
On the other hand, I see more lower- and middle-class people at places like Chinese Buffet or fast food, where the object is not the atmosphere or dining experience, it’s shoving food (lots of it! supersize!) down the gullet. As usual, when you’re worrying about money, you’re a little lower on Maslow’s Heirarchy and have to worry more about the amount of food than whether or not the napkins are elegant.
It is more about the experience of it all, plus its probably more so the right proportions in more courses so you feel more full. Middle grade restaurants give outrageous portions, it really isn’t what you should be eating in one sitting.
Blondie is on to something. The portions have become enormous in this country, which is certainly one major contributing factor to the national obesity epidemic. Having an Italian five course meal of (small portions of): soup, pasta, main course, cheese plate, dessert is still probably filling, but not quite as filling as having a three course meal of a giant plate of cheesesticks, huge pasta dish and enormous slice of cheesecake.
Um. We did this last night for our anniversary. The food amounts look small, but DAMN they are not. We were both fed to the point of ridiculousness.
It really was all about the experience of the food though (and especially this is true where we went). The service was impeccable, the experience was awesome, and really, honestly, truly the courses were small, but when you get ten of them, even over two hours, it’s a ton of food. More than I could eat. And I have a really healthy appetite.
I love nice restaurants. My boyfriend and I did have to go get more food after one meal though. I was full, he was not and has never let me live it down since. I like original food with high quality ingredients so that is why I love going.
