When do they start? Any ideas about the history/origin of them?

This article may shed some light on things.
I was told that the twelve days of Christmas are the twelve days after Christmas. They are celebrated because the three wise men arrived twelve days after Jesus’ birth.
It’s because of the twelve days of stress leading up to Christmas; stress to finish your shopping on time. Then there are the 12 days after Christmas when you start getting your credit card bills.
Next year I’m going to fire a shot in the air and just tell my young daughter and my grandchildren that Santa committed suicide.
Christmas is the first day and the epiphany its the 12th
