How could I park in NYC on New Years Eve?

Asked by queenzboulevard (2553points) December 20th, 2008

I’m 8 hours from the city, and I want to get there in the morning of Dec. 31. Can you park in the city? Can you even drive in the city? I don’t really want to have to get a hotel, and I highly doubt any are available. What should I do about driving up there that day, or maybe the day before?

You’re gonna pay out the ass for a garage most likely. If I was gonna do it I’d park on the other side of town and take the subway in. PS. I think the Hyatts in the area still have a few rooms.

Park in Jersey and take the PATH train in.

I second nikipedia’s remark—park somewhere in NJ (Hoboken, Jersey City, etc.) and take the PATH train in. Everyone else is going to have the same idea, though…

I would take it one more step and drive further into NJ, get a cheap room, and take a regular NJTransit train. A good area to do that is the area I live in, which is Rahway. Just a mile or two away from the Rahway train station is a wealth of cheap motels/hotels. Try that instead. You have a much better chance of not being raped for parking. And, there’s free street parking all around the train station.

Edit: I should mention that Rahway is only 20–30 miles from Brooklyn, so we’re not in Bumfuck Egypt either. I think Manhattan is a 45 minute train ride.

I second regular NJTransit. The few times I used PATH trains they weren’t as reliable as regular NJTransit.

I do know when I was in Lyndhurst, NJ (which there are a few hotels nearby) there is a bus from NJTransit that takes you from there to the Port Authority in 20 minutes.

@blondie: I hesitated to mention the bus because they get stuck in the same cruddy traffic.

I’ve never had a problem, though New Year’s is a different time. I never go into the city on New Years. I misunderstood the question I guess. Ooops

Yeah, I live south of Times Square, and if the question is “can I park in NYC on New Year’s Eve?”, the answer is definitely NO. Thanksgiving was terrible – there was no where to park, and New Years will be worse. Definitely take one of the above suggestions (although I’ll tell you that both the subways and PATH trains will be PACKED), but definitely don’t even try to park close to Times Square.

I’m just confused on the question really. There are a hundred different ways you could do it. I’m just not sure if his end result is wanting to be in Times Square.

@blondie I just want to get to the city for the New Year’s celebration lol. My gf has never been to any cities before, she just watches the TRL celebration on MTV. I’m 8 hours away so I was going to drive up there (don’t have the cash to fly or take a train from here). I thought perhaps I could park right in the city somewhere, but it’ll be too packed or too expensive. Right now I’m planning on getting a cheap motel in Newark (near Newark Penn) so that I can park there. Then I’ll probably take the PATH to World Trade Center station and take a taxi up to times square (or as close as I can get). I know a couple who lived in the city, and they said if you wanna get a good spot you need to be there around 3 or 4 p.m., which is a lot of standing but it will probably be worth it. All suggestions on how to make this little road trip better are welcome :)

Every PATH train is going to be packed, but the Herald Square station is closer to Times Square, but probably where most people would go so even more packed. All you would have to do is get out and walk a few blocks. Getting there at 3 or 4pm is still going to be packed and crowded. Dress warmly! I never get tourists that go down to Times Square for NYE, hope you have fun and be safe!!

Yeah, I’m with blondie.
Coming from someone who’s lived in NYC, I’d put money on the fact that you’d probably have more fun/be able to celebrate better/have an all around much better experience if you just parked in NJ or on Long Island or something and then went to a bar or something downtown. :) BUT maybe it’d be nice to say that you did it once in Times Square. I don’t know. Not appealing to me. At all. Good luck!

My advice is to not even bother, and take a cab to whereever you’re going.
