A "reply" feature in fluther threads: good idea or not?

Asked by lrk (757points) December 21st, 2008

What do people think of the idea of adding a “reply” feature in fluther threads—i.e., nested replies to comments?

On one hand, it seems silly to me to specify who I’m replying to instead of just having a feature to click on a particular post, but on the other hand, I could just be wanting features for the sake of wanting features—the current system doesn’t really have any flaws.

Thoughts?

Hmmm. I like it.

I don’t necessarily see any need for it. I think the current method of @replying works fine. I don’t really see how nested replies would add value in this context.

Sounds interesting though… I’d like to hear more before deciding completely. Any examples?

I like it the way it is. It’s conversational. Everyone generally reads the entire thread before answering, and most of the time the threads don’t end up getting too long. It’s easy enough to just say “hey @whoever, blah blah blah”

Forums where people quote other people using boxes of quotes within boxes, or using indents, get too confusing. And that kind of thing is generally done on sites that don’t have the sense of community that Fluther has. On other sites it seems like quoting someone else in that way generally fosters arguments, where someone will quote someone else and say “this is wrong.” I feel like know you guys. If shilolo says something, I associate what he said with him. I don’t need to quote what he said in order to say “I agree with shi.”

In general, I’m stubborn when it comes to change. My feelings are that:
1. Fluther is perfect the way it is.
2. I don’t like anything that compromises the clean feel of the site.
3. Any new features bring us that much closer to signatures containing obscene pictures.

Personally, I’d love it. They have a ‘reply to post’ button over at AV. It’s much easier to keep track of who you’re replying to. This @ is strange. I don’t post here a whole lot because of the way this is set up. They also have the posts NUMBERED & TIME STAMPED. To me, this is a big mish-mash. Okay, fine. Kill the squirrel.

I think it might be a good idea. Sometimes I’m interested in the side conversations, and sometimes I’m not. Indenting somehow – in a clean way – can help us only read what we want to. I think it’s worth a look-see.

What about the case when you want to reference something someone else said, but you have a completely new idea to add? Should that be a reply or a new post? If it’s a new post wouldn’t someone still need to use @ notation?

[If the a system requires you to still use @ notation, why abandon it?]

I like it the way it is…clean, conversational, and easy to read.

Most of the discussion threads I’ve been on lately have some sort of reply link or button for the past few years. Early on, we had to copy & paste the text we wanted to quote, then just reply to the thread normally. I like the idea of threaded comments, saves having to scroll down and search through a bunch of comments to find a reply to yours.
