What does a shoe box outside of guy's door mean?
I spent the night with a guy that I just met (nothing intimate happened). This is a military guy that has his “buddies live nearby. When I awoke in the morning to leave – outside his door was a shoe box. I told him there was a shoe box outside his door and he said he had placed it there. Does this mean something or am I just imagining – or is this guy just weird?

It meant “do not disturb”
A variant of the “hat on the doorknob” or “Call your Mom” on the dorm door dry erase board. It means “if you interfere with my getting lucky, I will kick your butt, stay the heck out.”
maybe it means something else? like, maybe he was expecting some sort of top secret delivery inside the box?
In my [dorm] room we use the blue post-it note that says “Take out the trash when you get in”.
Probably the same kind of thing. Ours just means “I’ve got a girl in here, if you come in you might see something you don’t want to”
If he was in the military, he might have left his boots outside to be polished. Someone could also be acting as his butler, based on a bet that they made previously, and that would even better explain the polishing. I think that the more likely answer is the “do not disturb” signal however, but I have to say it is a weird one.
In my day (or heyday) it was a tie hung over the doorknob.
ties are too obvious…in a dorm hall if you have a tie on your door, people WILL bang on it and be jerks.
I bet he put it there as a reminder to make sure his shoes/boots were clean and presentable. That’s a big issue in the Armed Services. My Dad, (who was in the Navy), kept his shoes freshly polished and in neat rows with shoe trees in them, rotating them daily his entire lifetime.
