So… here’s the deal. I run Blackbox on my computer (XP).. I was just working and I get pop ups blah blah. Ran some scans, got rid of some shit, reboot and bam.. no gui. no blackbox. nothing but the wallpaper. I can still run programs from task manager > cmd line (can’t even use the shortcut “Windows key + R), but well… shiit! I also can’t scroll using the touch pad, nor can I control the volume with the function key, etc…..
any idea of what’s going on?

Sounds like your window manager didn’t start properly. Can you start blackbox from the command line?
can you run Explorer.exe from the task manager?
I can start blackbox from the command line, but say for example I want to open a link in a new tab. usually I would just middle click on the link, but shortcuts like that don’t work.
lercio: yes i can.
Sounds like your startup list might have gotten corrupted. Can you not just reinstall blackbox on top of your existing configuration?
I had a similar problem recently. After boot-up and no desktop I would ctrl-alt-del and check the task manager. Sometimes there was a running explorer.exe, sometimes not. I could usually manually start a new explorer.exe and everything worked, but what a pain. I ended up deleting my profile directory, and deleting any start-up items I didn’t need. That fixed it for me. With a new profile and slimmed down start-up its been working fine.
Why do you think my scrolling/shortcuts/hotkeys don’t work anymore?
I’ve reinstalled blackbox and I’m going to reboot and see if it loads correctly
Two things, they probably either got reset or the link to them doesn’t exist anymore since you’re loading blackbox manually. Restart and then let us know what happens.
all right same thing happened. No gui whatsoever, nor blackbox. I have to reinstall blackbox just to use it again because I don’t know what command to use to start it
thanks for the help btw
I’ve been out of the loop for about half a year since I quit my IT job and well…
This happens a lot on my old work PC. Only way I could get it to work was CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose “log off” then log back in and everything was as it should be. Weird. A colleague just started to get the same issue when he installed the blackberry software.
In most cases re-installing windows over the exisiting installation clears it but I’d back up data first.
wow, logging off actually worked… weird how that did it and not restarting. but yeah, now my shortcuts work again! woop! and blackbox loads on boot hell yeah
thanks everyone!
