What is the gamestyle of GTA IV like?

Asked by meemorize (324points) December 23rd, 2008 from iPhone

I’m considering getting the new GTA IV but I didn’t like the other games of the series very much because they had next to no continuous storyline. Gameplay was pretty much irrelevant inside the vast ‘open’ world… Now I’ve heard that the new title has a great storyline and I’m wondering what the style now is?
Is it something along the lines of “do a certain mission then at the end of that mission you get the next one”?
Or is it still pretty much irrelevant of what you do in the game?

(before people complain of insulting their favourite game, when I mention the ‘other titles’ I am mostly referring to the old “2D” style gtas)

Thanks for reading

Gta vi is just like the other ones, just another sequal.

I disagree, I did not like the other games but this one has an in depth story line coupled with a much better firing system. It’s got more real life physics when you’re driving (you have to be way more careful).

Most of the missions are pretty fun and it makes running around shooting people and stealing cars crazy boring in comparison.

The game is so in depth that you can get on a computer and browse the in game “Internet” or sit in your apartment and watch the crazy nonsense on TV.

You progress the game by starting a mission. You might have 8 different missions that you could start (at any given time) and you’ll trigger them by checking your email, calling your contact, or driving to a trigger hotspot (labeled on the map).

The other GTAs were just childish shoot-um-ups. If you step in to the shoes of Niko Belik as claws his way through the ranks, you will not be disappointed.

GTA III was not a childish shoot em up, they had a story and character development just like IV the only difference is the world is more developed. I would say give it a try but if you didn’t like GTA 3 I doubt you’ll like 4.

I didn’t like three but loved four.

In 4, I didn’t feel like I was running around doing the same thing over and over again and every single play session didn’t turn into a kill-fest where I’m just trying to avoid the cops (like it did in three for me).

It’s like comparing the 8 bit mario brothers to mario galaxy. Sure it’s the same game with the same characters but one is just a wee bit more polished much more fun to play.

*I owned three by the way.

GTA IV is, basically, mission after mission. What you do outside of the missions rarely bear any consequence to the main story (and when it does, it’s very minimal). The missions themselves become very repetitive (ie: Meet contact, drive to other location, shoot some dudes, drive away while possibly being chased by other dudes, get money). There are no mission check points, which is absolutely ridiculous. The story isn’t “great”, it’s all right. The environments are fantastic, though they (of course) don’t make up for the gameplay. Good game, not game of the year or 10/10 as many reviews may lead you to believe.

@ bodyhead, you seem to be like me in that regard that I have always felt the running around shooting stuff was pointless and boring.
I think I’ll give it a try. Sounds like there is a good chance I will actually like this game!

Thanks everyone.
