Of Popes and Hubris.

There are many stories in the bible regarding humans believing that they can emulate God, and all of those people are destroyed in some way in the Bible. Or they learn fun new languages. In an earlier discussion about Harry Potter and D&D, I hypothesized that magic was “off limits” for hardcore Christians because it represented a challenge to God, and so was unacceptable.
However, there seems to be one glaring exception to the one-God rule. The Catholic doctrine of Papal Infallibility, which is not mentioned even slightly in the Bible. It states that anything the Pope says instantly becomes the word of God. This seems rife with hubris, and indeed, represents an attempt by man to emulate God. Has this discrepancy ever been addressed in the church?

It was addressed in the Reformation.
Catholics are not encouraged to read the Bible and translate it by their own selves because the only authority that has that in the catholic church is the clergy,..thank God my eyes were opened and God revealed that to me through the right people and his Holy Spirit. Until a person won’t come to God sincerely from ALL himself/herself wanting God to reveal himself than I don’t know ,..without Christ I wasn’t spiritual I was caught up in spare rituals.
actually we as catholics are very encouraged to read the bible…maybe your “teacher” was leading your flock astray.
Martin Luther was a German fellow who pinned a note on a church door that said, “Hang on a minute!” Actually, he was German so, “Ein minuten bitter!”
@seVen: As a Catholic I was constantly encouraged to read the Bible. Dunno what church you were with.
@syz: I wouldn’t say it’s the Catholic Church who did them but a few very flawed men in power. All organizations attract corruption unfortunately. I’d rather blame it on the few than the whole church which has been overall a good influence on the world.
