I've never been a big NASCAR or racing fan and I don't know much about the sport of racing so I was wondering if someone could tell me why they race counter-clockwise instead of clockwise on oval tracks?

I know it’s Christmas day and it might seem like an odd question right out of the blue (and it is really) but I was sitting around at work wondering this very thing and it seemed like a good time to ask.
