So you want to be my webhost?

Asked by lrk (757points) December 25th, 2008

Quick! I’m looking at webhosts, and one of my potential hosts has a deal that expires at the end of today (Christmas), so give me tips, fast!

I’m looking for a webhost. I don’t need anything particularly high-powered—I’d probably wind up getting the cheapest plan at whatever company I go to.

Advice/horror stories/super stories/etc. from your host or ones you know about? Thanks! :D

if you have the cash i'd go for mediatemple.net ( i was using their grid-service )
but eleven2.com is good as well as webfusion.com but hostrocket.com is offering 6 months free if you buy a 24 month plan.

i havent’t had any problems with any one of these hosts.

I've gone with DreamHost.com for the past 3 years, and have been very happy with them.

I used dreamhost.com as my first host, attracted by the low price and then experienced an outage of services lasting an entire week before I finally quit (even though the outage went on longer) and switched to mediatemple.

MT is expensive relative to other services but offers excellent service, comprehensive feature set, and most importantly is very reliable.

hmm. I’m instantly and automatically suspicious of anything claiming to be “free”. My initial suspicion was that they put ads on your website, but their info page claims they don’t. So I’m forced to wonder “what’s the catch?”. The fact that their FAQ doesn’t acknowledge people would have that question makes me even more suspicious.

So…. wooch06, care to let us know? How exactly do they pay for hosting if they give it to their customers for free?

right now, dream host is offering unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth for ~ $10 for a full year.

i just signed up with yakkel.com, i'm testing it out! :D
