Why is my MacBook so slow?

Asked by ezraglenn (3502points) September 12th, 2007

I’ve had it for almost a year, its a black one with a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 512 MB of memory, and an 80GB hard drive, about 20 gigs of which is free. When more than one or two programs are running, everything is excruciatingly slow and application such as word, firefox, safari, ichat, itunes and even the finder and dock freeze often.

Download and run Onyx (check macupdate.com or versiontracker.com). Check everything under the automate tab and let it run.

This repairs permissions, runs cron jobs, clears caches, etc.

I run it about ever 2 weeks.

Also, consider adding some more ram. Max it out if you can.

xslimmer, which strips out either ppc or intel code, will also boost startup speed for apps.

A word of caution about getting rid of PowerPC code. If the program uses Rosetta you will destroy the app. So make sure you know exactly what you are doing. And yes, I learned about this the hard way. I totally hosed my install of Photoshop and had to reinstall it.
