Tips for roadtrippting by myself?

Asked by hTownDude (178points) December 25th, 2008

None of my friends are interested in going on some day trips with me to a few different small towns about 2–3 hours away. I was thinking about doing it myself, but wanted to know if anyone had any tips/advice to make my road trips safer, more efficient, etc. Thanks.

Take roads you haven’t before and, if weather permits, avoid interstates. Neither more efficient nor safer, but much more fun.

Actually avoiding main roads around the holidays may be somewhat safer, depending on where you live and what the holiday travel density is like.

Make sure that you take precautions to be safe. I know you’re not going far, but because you’ll be going alone, you need to take precautions.

Pack a small first-aid kit for the car and bring an ice scraper for it too!

LOTS OF MUSIC.

And take a cell phone, make sure someone knows where you are going and what routes you are taking, make sure you have enough money for gas, etc. Never pick up hitchhikers! Know where your spare tire is, make sure you’re not too tired while driving, don’t overestimate how far you can drive without stopping.

Happy travels!

Music! but 2–3 hours isn’t that bad I used to do it all the time. I have a 27 hour road trip coming up in two, I’ll be absent from fluther ( what ever will I do) and I am not looking forward to it, but I am looking forward to the destination! I typically stick to driving during the day because I am wide awake then so it’s safe but I am gonna try to do 14–16 hours my first day this time so wish me luck! Good luck to you as well h Town!

I agree with Tits. ;o) Oh, and it’s always a great idea to have a AAA membership!! Have fun and don’t speed in the rain!!

@ Tits only pick up hitchhikers if they are hot girls like in the movies… but not below the mason dixon line or you are asking for a House of 1000 Corpses ending.

FINGER NAIL CLIPPERS!!

Bring them. I took a two week road trip and my nails where all long and nasty.

Also, try be adventurous. You’re probably never gonna see these things again in your life.

And try to make some local friends. They’ll know there REAL cool places to go. Plus, you could keep in touch. It’s good to have friends in different places across the country.

I don’t know how my own experience is relevant here, since you’re obviously talking about roadtrips in the US. But letting people know where you are is always a good idea, because you might simply get lost, lose your phone, run out of battery or something.

I used to go mountain hiking alone a lot last year. But there was no signal on the mountain, so I’d always call my sister first, tell her about it and tell her to call her rescuer friends if I was more than an hour late (I left some more time to spare of course). Then I’d always call her on the way back to make sure she wouldn’t be worried. Usually I made it back 20–30 mins even before the expected time, so that was fine.

I do this all the time, and have lots of fun. I often drive by myself to a city 2 hours away just to go shopping at Trader Joe’s.

Make sure you have a map, cell phone charger, and a good spare tire. Leave your license plate number and description of your car with someone (just in case) and let someone know where you’re going and when you intend to be back. Make sure you take some cash with you, and have a credit card just in case something happens to the car.

I like to drive the back roads to places.
