What do you think of the new commercial featuring John Lennon?

Asked by bythebay (8214points) December 27th, 2008

I suppose it would his computer manipulated self, not actually him . Anyway, I found it rather unsettling, much like those videos where current performers are morphed into appearing with long since deceased performers (think Elvis, Nat King Cole).
It’s hard to believe it’s been 28 years since he was killed.

I think he would have approved. It is a little disconcerting though.

I find it very unsettling, at least it is for a good cause. I think the entire idea of resurrecting dead celebrities to promote anything is just morbid. The worst? Fred Astaire dancing with a Dirt Devil. I couldn’t find a video of it, but that is probably just as well, creepy is really the only word to describe it. Rant over.

The creepy factor outweighs the good cause.

First time I have seen it. I really don’t like it. I too, think it is creepy.

I am not sure he would have approved it. but he was a weird kind of guy so who knows. lol

It may be a good message and a good cause, but “re-animating” the dead for the sake of advertising is presumptuous at best, creepy at worst.

I assume Yoko approved this, so legally it’s fine, but still…creepy.

I have no problem with it. I sure he doesn’t either because he is dead. It’s for a good cause so I sure he would approve if he were still alive.

I know he had some serious personal issues and all, but this project seems like something that the man he was when he died would support.

As for this spot, I don’t like it when advertisers do this. He’s dead. Don’t do this. Just don’t.

That is just so many kinds of wrong. The man was against the Beatles’ songs being used in advertising in any way. How could he have been for this?

I see this as very different than, say, Audrey Hepburn dancing around in her skinny black jeans. At least that was a performance she actually did being reused.

that was pretty creepy. i love him and all, and i think he’d support the cause if laptops were even thought of as a necessary commodity when he lived, but the commercial is just pretty freaky. i don’t really like it.

@supermouse, really? a dirt devil? that is so incredibly disturbing, using a dead man to advertise a vacuum cleaner, and wrong on so many levels…

the voice sounded nothing like him.

@Tiffy, it was as disturbing as it sounds, that’s probably why I couldn’t find the footage online. It was just horrifying if you ask me.

poofandmonk: I agree. His voice sounds so synthesized which lends an air of insincerity. I’m not sure what the thought process was behind the ad, but I’ve yet to hear anyone, on Fluther or otherwise, that likes the ad.
