Dishwasher or hand wash? Garbage disposal or scrape into trash? Which methods do you use and why?
Me? I’m a hand washer because I believe it saves energy. I’m a scraper because I don’t want leftovers clogging up my sink (again).

It has been proven that using a dishwasher is more environmentally friendly than hand washing.(i would think that applies to a full load).
Compost all kitchen waste(peelings and scrapings)
Time and energy savers, absolutely. But I have to say, the disposal isn’t meant to be an alternative to the garbage can. I may be the exception, but I generally give dishes a once-over before I pop them in the dishwasher. Also, without a microwave, I would probably starve.
Oh, and I have i-Robots cleaning my floors, too.
What would make them environmental nightmares?
@oasis: I think it depends on the method of dishwashing. I, personally, can’t stand to have my hands in gross water so if I handwash (and several of my dishes require it), I keep the water running the entire time. It’s an environmental nightmare. Certainly it would be worth the energy to spare the water.
However, if you are the kind of person who can do dishes in a stopped up sink, that might be better. (But ew, ew, ew, ew, ew.)
My inexpensive energy-saver Kenmore dishwasher has a timer on it; I therefore can run it at 4:00AM when electric rates are cheaper. I too scrape and compost and do a tad of pre-hand-rinsing.
Oh,if it’s yellow let it mellow….......you know the rest.
The greatest thing that anyone can do for the environment is the above.
Like most of our modern culture, they’re probably both.
