Where can I find information on vintage jewelry?

Asked by Daethian (334points) December 29th, 2008

My mother and sister have purchased a large amount of vintage jewelry from estate sales and I am now selling it on Etsy. The problem is I am not well versed in what the different styles are called or what all of the bead types are. I need a resource guide to help me better describe the items.

This is a very difficult question to answer. Most guides will not have your exact piece listed so you have to make some assumptions. My best answer would be to look at websites of those selling vintage and antique jewelery and see what you can glean from that. Or, spend a few bucks and get a written appraisal and all of the descriptions will be included and you can use that in you sales efforts.

I used to sell vintage jewelery and antiques and have some knowledge, but it is a very tricky field so be careful.

Try ebay under antiques maybe. Good luck

Do you have a jewelry store with a certified gemololist or such? Show him/her some of the pieces and get an estimate. Here our only jewelry store sells antique or vintage pieces on consignment. Not a very hot market these days, of course.

I have a lot of pieces a jewelry would quickly tell me to screw off LOL
I found a site that has been of some help. It gives names to certain styles and looks.
