Have you ever driven with a mattress attached to the top of your car?

Asked by saranwrapper (2095points) December 29th, 2008

I’m doing just that tomorrow and I’m freaking out a bit…ok a lot. Do you have any tips for me? Tips that will help me avoid having a mattress fall off of my car on the 101?

Ugh, I hate moving.

Make sure its properly anchored down with rope/bunjie cords. Don’t drive too fast.

Yes, a mattress and a box spring. I was super paranoid and used like 15 feet of rope, lashing and lashing and lashing and being extra careful everything was tight. I also wouldn’t drive too fast, as mattporter said.

No, I have a truck….but I have enjoyed going to Home Depot and watching people try to fit a table and 4 chairs in their convertible BMW along with other wonderful sights….the gas prices might kill me but when I need to move myself/friends I’m always happy to have my pickup truck :-)

I moved from SJ to SF with a mattress tied over a bunch of stuff in the back of my boyfriend’s truck. The rope broke and all my stuff blew out onto the freeway. It was a few miles before I realized it. Just have a good rope and tie it down well. My boyfriend was an idiot which is why things happened the way they did. I lost everything.

Yep, and it’s no picnic! Just make sure you tie it down really good front to back and side to side, and go slow. Also pray it doesn’t rain!!

Yep. I was a nervous wreck, but it was well secured, I drove slower than usual and everything was fine. Good luck!

My boyfriend and I held our mattress on top of our VW with our hands as we drove very slowly down the road…don’t suppose that would fly on a freeway, though. Another mattress we tied to runners on a Range Rover and took it from the bottom of Manhattan to the top of the Bronx. That one kept sliding on turns, and we had to pull over and readjust it several times. Remember to wrap it in a tarp or something.
