Whatever happened with the human clone announcements a few years ago?

Asked by asmonet (21455points) December 31st, 2008

A few years ago there was a company who claimed to have cloned a human, I think a little girl. It was a company affiliated with some crazy people who thought aliens spoke through their leader, I know people at the time were saying it was a cult.

I wanna say they were a South American company. I know the spokeswoman that handled all of the press conferences came under attack because of her English, and her…trashy appearance. All she ever said was, trust us, we cloned a person. Just have faith. As far as I know, no baby ever materialized. Does anyone know who the woman was or what the company was called?

I’m thinking this was around 2000?

For the record, I think the woman was batshit. I just can’t remember who the hell these people were and it’s bugging me like you wouldn’t believe.

I thought it was Eastern Europe, myself. But I could be wrong…

There was also a report of cloning of human embryos from Korea. This turned out to be a giant fraud, and the scientist behind the fraud went from national hero to pariah.
