Where are some places to go in NYC where I can sit and read, shielded from the weather? (E.g., buildings that have public lobbies, furniture stores which don’t notice me sitting on their chairs for a few hours, etc.)
I suppose specific cafés are worth mentioning if they’re particularly notable, but I’m thinking more along the lines of the parenthetical comment above.

There was one public lobby that I really enjoyed going to that had a large waterfall wall in it/was so peaceful. It also had a little coffee stand in the lobby. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the streets it was on… Somewhere in East midtown. But that doesn’t help you at all… (Ugh, sorry!)
I love reading in the cafe of Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Center. It’s sometimes a bit loud and a bit too commercial for my liking, but the view if you can score a window seat is FABulous!
I used to like to sit in what was the IBM building on 57th and Madison but I haven’t lived in NY for 15 years.
There’s also the waiting area at Grand Central Terminal.

The Ford Foundation Bldg has an indoor atrium garden and pond open to the public during business hours…321 E 42nd St. (at Third Ave.
And Trump Tower
737 5th Avenue
Date: 1983
Trump Tower is a 58-story, reinforced concrete, shear-wall/core structure and was the tallest structure of this type in New York City when completed.. The building’s public spaces are clad in Breccia Pernice, a pink white-veined marble. This includes the office lobby, off Fifth Avenue, and the five-level atrium which has a waterfall, shops, cafés, and a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the waterfall’s pool. The atrium is crowned with a skylight.
The public library; the libraries and just about any of the buildings at at NYU, Columbia, Barnard; Edgar’s Cafe on West 84 is cute; The Strand is great!
